2024 ACC football will be the best ever
FSU will have another great team.

This will be the best Miami team in 20 years.

Clemson finished the season strong and should be a little improved.

VT is shaping up to be a good team.

SU is stocking up on talent via the transfer portal.

SMU dominated a solid AAC conference and will be very competitive from the start.

UNC will continue to be UNC.

Jeff Brohm is a great coach and UL will be in the ACCCG hunt.

Wake returns a lot of players, well coached and should be a little better.

UVA improved a lot from the beginning to the end of the season. I’m expecting them to at least win the winnable OOC games.

Pitt had an unusual down year, they ought to see some improvement.

NCSU is always very solid.

GT has a fun offense with a lot of play makers, they’ll be tough to beat.

Stan and Cal are a bit unknowns, not sure how they will do.

Q: Why couldn't the ACC do this the year before the TV contract was up?
(Q2: is anyone on this board old enough to remember the last time the contract was up?)

Cuz the transfer portal was not around back then.

The original ACC contract would have been up next year, but without the GoRs half of the conference would be gone already.

NCSU will , on paper, have the most talent in school history (thanks to the portal).

Cal is right there witchya in portal rankings. They also had a respectable 6-6 regular season in a pretty good Pac conference.

Everyone seems to just assume that SMU will be the newbie that makes waves, but I'm not so sure this whole realignment situation hasn't awakened a sleeping Bear...

I would be (pleasantly) surprised if they are able to sustain any initial success. Hopefully their rich donors open up their purses.

I think the conference will be pretty stout too.

The Cards just picked up another transfer, from Tennessee, who we flipped from Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss. Edge player who will bookend nicely with Ashton Gillotte. Our D should be pretty decent.

BUT ...

One thing I will be watching ... the effect of travel west (and east) on teams.

My Cards flopped in their bowl game in San Diego to a team I felt we matched up well against. Next year, we travel TO Stanford .... will that 3-hour time difference hurt the Cards? We also host SMU, which I am looking forward to, but that will be sneaky tough.

Home field advantage for cross-continent games will be significant, especially for
Late night games on the West Coast (8 pm PT = 11 pm ET)
Noon games on the East Coast (noon ET = 9:00 am in California)

That said, preparing for a trip to California is easy: just stay up late the night before!

For goodness sake, why would the ACC schedule a game for an East Coast team to start at 11:00 pm Eastern time? You lose most of your TV audience. For that matter, why would the ACC schedule games involving West Coast teams to start at 9:00 am Pacific time? Again, you lose a good part of your TV audience. The games involving both a West Coast and an East Coast team will start during a range of time between 2:00 pm and 8:30 pm Eastern time. That's a significant range. It gives you the best TV audiences, which is the point. ACCN will show games starting at 11:00 pm Eastern but they will involve only West Coast teams. Except for one game, they'll all be non-conference games.

You are not thinking like a TV executive.
ESPN has all the content they need for 3:30 pm until 11:00 pm. What they need most are games from noon to 3:30 and after 11 pm.
That's not so say that all cross-country match-ups will be in those time slots, but ask yourself, honestly: if ESPN/ABC has Duke at Cal on a Saturday when Florida State plays UNC, Clemson plays NC State, and Virginia Tech plays Pitt... which of those 4 games is going to 11:00 PM?

(The only thing the ACC can do to mitigate this is to be careful about scheduling - but that doesn't change the need for noon and 11 pm kickoff games)

I know it’s NFL vs NCAA but watching the 49ers and Packers game last night there seem to be No Shortage of Rabid Football Fans in the stands. This is the same SF that folks are defining as EV loving environmentalists and homeless folks that have no interest whatsoever in sports. I think going forward Cal and Stanford will be hard places to come away with a W . New conference to Them will spike a lot of fan interest there.

I bet we don't see a single east coast ACC school with anything later than a 6PM west coast time kick.
