Who from their current staffs are viable candidates? No HCs, so the assistants. UNC assistants Sean May maybe, not too many UNC ties. Kansas assistant Jeremy Case, too young & Self isn't have him go to ODU. Gonzaga? None of them are leaving the west coast.

Forget those programs. If you're looking at assistants, you're more likely to see names like Ivan Thomas (Georgetown, Norview grad), Mike Jones (Maryland, ODU grad), Milan Brown (Pitt, former ODU asst), Neill Berry (Marquette, former Darrin Horn assistant), Christian Webster (VT), Mike Pegues (Butler, Dematha grad), Michael Huger (Temple, Odell's best friend), Luke Murray (UConn), Gerry McNamara (Syracuse), Terry Johnson (Purdue), Joel Justus (NC State), Adam Cohen (Xavier), Kareem Richardson (NC State)

Maybe someone like Steve Robinson from Arizona?

I'd be intrigued by Dave Smart from Texas Tech.

But, again, Austin Claunch is an assistant at Alabama with D1 Head Coaching success at Nicholls.

Which is impossible to do.

The more I read of Claunch, the more I like.

It would be a home run hire IMO, and it comes with special perks.

I've wondered about him. He has been at UVA for a while. If he is that good, why hasn't he gotten a shot at a Head Coach gig. Of course, he may just be happy being an assistant at UVA.

Amen to that. I don’t really have a name in mind but my preference would be someone that has had experience playing with ODU or a similar mid major that truly believes we can be better than we are. I am not crazy about a retread coach for sure. It would be nice to hire someone that another school might like to have. I guess the last one was Oliver Purnell.

Nobody associated with UVA whatsoever. I don’t even want to hire a coach who’s ever been to Charlottesville.

What about BT, he gets Drew to come and grooms to become HC. He's already on the payroll.

I want to get back to the good ole days, but this isn’t a movie. I’m not convinced it would work.

If you want to go the BT connection, Drew is an option. So is Travis Decuire (Montana), or you can go Russell Turner from UC Irvine. He’s a Virginia native who hired BT during his comeback. He’s a sitting head coach who has taken his team to the tournament.

If you want someone who is a sitting head coach, there may be a number of options:

Griff Aldrich, Longwood
Bill Coen, Northeastern
Matt Langel, Colgate
AW Hamilton, Eastern Kentucky
Justin Gray, Western Carolina
John Becker, Vermont (he's my pick from the names mentioned in this group)

From the they probably wouldn't take it, but it's worth calling group:
Rob Senderoff, Kent State
Bob Richey, Furman
Mike Jones, UNCG (He worked for Hemphill at Radford)

From the Wood taking care of his friends group:
Darrin Horn, Northern Kentucky

If you want to kick tires on former coaches currently unemployed, but who will likely have better options:

Chris Mack
Mark Turgeon
Ben Howland
Josh Pastner

He's my #1 pick, but I don't think we can afford him, and he's likely to get some big time looks.

Michigan and DePaul come to mind here.

DePaul has a lot of issues right now. They don’t have the NIL or the on campus facility and both are hurting them dearly. They need a miracle worker.

They should hire Will Wade.

In all seriousness, I want someone who can recruit and has national connections.

Jeff Jones plays boring basketball. Tony Bennett is the epitome of boring basketball. Can we please leave the UVA trash behind us?

Yeah, we'd have to commit to giving him a good salary off the jump, with a potential of making much more. I'm hoping the Sycamores can't find their way into the NCAA tourney and that he goes under the radar this year for bigger coaching jobs.

That should be no problem. The athlete department is way over inflated. I would start with reducing Wood’s .5 million salary. Like the government, there are plenty of waste, in the athletic department with fund raising & the ODAF. After last year, FAU extended their coach 10 years with a 7M year contract (total). Lesson to Wood, don’t extend contracts further, while still under contract for years. I would think, after this year FAU would Be a so,so team, unless this guy is a tremendous recruiter. The gym resembles a high school gym. Somebody has money.
