Football games that should be annual and/or better promoted
1 NCSU vs Clemson - few people outside of ACC circles know that the Textile bowl is a thing; everybody knows about the Iron bowl, the Egg bowl, Paul Bunyan's axe, Little Brown Jug and even the joke of a Civil Conflict. Why is not this a Saturday night game at least on ESPN2? Why does this get so little fanfare?

2 UVA vs UNC - Neither team are traditional football powers, but they do have the distinction of having "the South's oldest rivalry" with 130 something consecutive games in a row. How is it that our media "partners" don't at least have a Gameday here every now and then like they do with HBCU or an Ivy game?

3 FSU vs GT - This game promotes itself. You don't believe me, just go back and watch the games between these 2 ever since the ACC split them up. You never know what's going to happen until the very end and that's why it should be annual.

4 VT vs GT - perhaps the only new, good game that came from the division split. Frank Beamer and Paul Johnson had some good battles and I think the game still stands the test of time. This feels made for a traditional mid-season Thursday night special.

5 UL vs UM - UL and UM are both top 5 in football ratings in the ACC, it would make sense that the newly minted Howard Schnellenberger trophy be an annual event. Besides that, UL has made other Florida connections including former coach Charlie Strong, Heisman winner Lamar Jackson and Teddy Bridgewater. No reason that this should not be promoted as an ACC game of the week.

6 UVA vs Cal - Neither team has much of an identity in anything and are kinda mirrors of each other, which makes it perfect as a new annual game. It just feels like there could be some magic with this one and a game that would be perfect for the CW.

VT vs UM - I remember when this was the BE's game of the year. As both teams faded, so has this game in importance. I feel like this match could be dropped and nobody would notice so I did not include them. Better off promoting VT vs Wake or Pitt.

FSU vs NCSU - This game usually has a prime time spot when FSU visits NCSU. Yes, the games are usually close, No it does not need heavy promotion or to be annual. NCSU vs UNC is a better game and more important to these fans, promote that one instead.

RE: Football games that should be annual and/or better promoted
Two of these actually ARE annual games (in bold, with 2024 dates):
Virginia Tech at Miami – Sept. 27
North Carolina at Duke – Sept. 28
Clemson at Florida State – Oct. 5
Wake Forest at NC State – Oct. 5
SMU at Stanford – Oct. 19
Syracuse at Pitt – Oct. 24
Florida State at Miami – Oct. 26
North Carolina at Virginia – Oct. 26
Syracuse at Boston College – Nov. 9
Duke at NC State – Nov. 9
Stanford at Cal – Nov. 23
Cal at SMU – Nov. 30
Pitt at Boston College – Nov. 30
NC State at North Carolina – Nov. 30
Duke at Wake Forest – Nov. 30
Virginia at Virginia Tech – Nov. 30

These are the MOST important annual games - and in the case of the North Carolina schools, they're pretty much full at this point.

My understanding of Georgia Tech is that they didn't want any annual rivals because they didn't want to get stuck playing FSU and Clemson every year (in addition to Jawja). I guess they got tired of having the #1 SoS every season...

Oh I know some of these mentioned are. In the case of UVA vs UNC, that's a game that goes unnoticed by the rest of the world and there in lies the problem. As already explained, UM vs VT does not peek any interest unless it's a couple of top 10 teams, as an annual, it could go away and only VT fans would miss it, doubt Miami loses any sleep.

Well, if we're honest, the only games with national interest are the ones where at least one - preferably both - team(s) are in the title hunt.

That's what made VT/UM great.
UVA/UNC just don't have that.

FSU/GT has been big and could be again - if GT wants it, too.
NCSU/Clemson is a no-win for Clemson (story of NC State fb)

I'd be glad to see the Seminoles and the Bears be a regular thing.

In one league or another. 03-rotfl

It's a good thing you don't do strategic planning for the ACC. You really seem to know nothing about college sports fans in NC and Va.

The context is that you don't seem to understand promotion and you don't understand the states of NC or Virginia. You can promote UNC and UVa all you like but until they meet each other on the football field with something on the line beside pride no one outside the two states are going to care. The same goes with NC State and UNC, especially as they tend to play the last week of the season when neither had a path to the title game.

A pimp, pimps what he has, not what he wishes he had. You already confuse and conflate an SEC audience tuning in to you playing Florida and or LSU with your "fans" as if you don't get that over the half the audience is tuned in to watch the other team. You don't seem to understand that unless it's made a national game on CBS, ABC, NBC, or FOX that a lesser audience is available for such games.

And when it comes to the Textile Bowl - well here you are:

CLEMSON ELIMINATES TEXTILES PROGRAM
the South Carolina Radio Network
October 31, 2010
South Carolina’s textile industry has been losing jobs for decades. In order to remain competitive, manufacturers are leaving the state to take advantage of labor costs in other countries.

Recognizing the shift in the industry, Clemson University says it will begin phasing out its textiles-related majors.

John Ballatto leads Clemson’s Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technology (COMSET). He said the degrees, which were offered as part of the school’s College of Materials Science & Engineering, will no longer be options for new students.

In place of the polymer and fiber chemistry majors, Clemson will instead offer a concentration in polymer materials for its materials science degree. Ballatto said the field is very broad, and Clemson is training students for the wide variety of materials they will face once they enter the workforce.

As the conveniences that we use every day have gotten more integrated in terms of their materials, the educational basis for the students who then go out and work in companies and innovate on those materials… also need to be broad-based.

Ballatto says Clemson is only following what American manufacturers are doing, since the private sector is already moving away from textiles. While traditional fiber products exist, most research is going into creating new, syntheitic materials and polymers.

The school will allow current students to graduate in polymer and fiber chemistry, before eliminating the major in 2013. Ballatto said the current number of students in the program is fewer than 100.

And when it comes to innovative textiles, it was those little ***** at Duke that finally made Harry Potter's Invisibility Cloak.

It is the job of the promoter to make people care. People like a good story, so latch onto one. The UNC vs UVA game on the CW was done very well and on prime time, the game was good, it needs to be done like that always.

TBH, games like UNC vs UVA seem ideal for the ACC Network. Why? Because its subscribers mainly live in the ACC footprint, where people are more likely to know about this rivalry.

IMO, the CW should get games like Cal vs Syracuse -- national, big TV markets, but not a lot of sizzle like a typical ESPN/ABC game.

You are right about that, coast to coast, nationally televisionized.

It was a good game but in the grand scheme of things it made UVa a three win team instead of a two win team and knocked UNC down a beg in the ACC bowl order. You can argue it ended their season when they were undefeated going into it but with road games at Clemson and NC State at the end of the season they probably weren't going to contend for Charlotte anyway.

If you're ABC or ESPN, the ACC to you right now is Florida State, Florida State, and more Florida State. The ACC should be happy FSU is winning right now because they have a bigger potential audience geographically than Clemson. The issue of course now is you have FSU dominating and having no competition (or the perception that there is no competition which is at least part of the reason they were left out of the Playoff last year). In an ideal world Florida State and Miami would both be good (call me old) at the same time. I think it would be great if Florida (UF) would be better because it would make FSU's wins over them look better but then if UF gets too good then they would beat FSU again. Is the fact that FSU is doing so well because UF has sucked recently? It's a double edged sword. There's only so much talent and recruiting is national so it's not like all Florida talent has to stay in state (not to mention Georgia is right next door).

There is some benefit to ABC/ESPN/CW wanting to showcase North Carolina and Duke because they are top men's basketball brands and may get some carryover to football so they're better choices than say Wake Forest. But of course they're going to choose as much Florida State as they can (and if TV audience is as old as I am and actually remembers them being good Miami). The ACC wanting to promote Tobacco Road football is like the Big Ten wanting to promote the Old Oaken Bucket or the Little Brown Jug. You don't know what they are? Only Big Ten fans know.

"The south's oldest rivalry" should not be a tier 3 game and that is my point. It should have an ACC game of the week vibe. Not saying it should be promoted over FSU vs Miami, FSU vs Clemson, it should not have to compete with those games. The unpredictability of the ACC should be reason enough to watch, throw in the historical aspect and UNC usually being a top 25 team, it should be no worse than a tier 2 game. I feel this game gets poorly promoted and if the ACC is going to improve their worth in the next contract, they need games like this one get it's rightful due.

The VaTech-Miami “rivalry” was relevant in the latter days of the Big East FBC. Other than that, it’s just a couple of schools that don’t have much in common. Miami has more history with the northeastern schools and VaTech with FSU when it comes to a FLA school.

Miami and Virginia Tech didn't join the Big East until 1991, and moved to the ACC in 2004. So they were only together in that conference for 13 years.

Prior to the Big East, VT and UM played each other 9 times - twice in bowls, 7 times were scheduled, beginning in 1953 but more often starting in 1966. I was personally present for the game at Blacksburg in 1982.

Miami and VT are rivals because they were both nationally relevant. Don't be jealous - you guys have that kind of rivalry with Kansas in men's basketball. But this is a football thing.
