watching the Coog fans wail in the comments is hilarious. The non-Coog fans get it, as one put it (an Aggie, actually), "Been saying this. Rice is a better area for pro football with the village being down the street. Better parking, nicer area, and gives Rice the chance to upgrade the stadium via rent $$$. Good all around". Pretty accurate summation.

Yes. The merged leagues are now known as the UFL - United Football League.

Can they even play at TDECU this spring? I thought they were undergoing some construction,

They can not, that's why they're playing at Rice Stadium. Some of the fans wanted Shell Energy stadium (or more unrealistically NRG) as the temporary stadium. It'd be great to keep them but we probably won't unless we make an incredible impression.

They will be very unlikely to draw a big enough crowd at NRG to justify the rent.

Guess this means we won't be seeing any great improvements to HRS this year...not that we expected to, but...

Date TBA Memphis Showboats, Rice Stadium, Houston, Time TBA ET, TV TBA
Date TBA Michigan Panthers, Rice Stadium, Houston, Time TBA ET, TV TBA

The press release implies there will be a mass training camp in Arlington.

https://uflboard.com/news/ufl-teases-a-s...ry-5-2024/

uflboard Wrote:"On the morning of Friday, February 2, 2024, the UFL announced the Houston Roughnecks would play home games at Rice University Stadium. With that last piece of the puzzle finally coming together, the UFL wasted no time in teasing that they would release their schedule on Monday, February 5, 2024.

Previously, UFL President Russ Brandon hinted that the 2024 schedule would be released in mid-January. The delay, likely caused by the uncertainty of a stadium in Houston, has set back the sale of individual game tickets by two weeks. With low ticket sales being an issue for the XFL in 2023, the UFL has its work cut out for it to ensure they are able to maximize ticket sales and ensure good gate revenue in 2024.

...

Single-ticket sales will follow the schedule release, hopefully beginning sometime on or after February 12th.

...

Most UFL markets had already been selling season tickets, but Houston ticket sales had been on hold. Now that the UFL has confirmed the stadium for Houston, season ticket sales are ready to go full speed on Monday.

Afterward, the UFL training camp is coming up soon, scheduled to take place in Arlington, Texas, beginning February 24th. Afterward, the UFL season kicks off on Saturday, March 30th, with a face-off between the Birmingham Stallions and the Arlington Renegades.

These Spring football leagues have a history of struggling to pay their bills. Whatever Rice gets as rent, it won’t be much. I hope payment was upfront.

So what happened to the Gamblers? They folded? If so, that's too bad. I liked them. The Roughnecks are weak.

When the USFL and XFL merged the Roughnecks folded, the current roughnecks are actually the Gamblers from last year but the Gamblers adopted the Roughnecks name and branding.

That stinks. It should have been the other way around. The Gamblers brand is much stronger. Hopefully they go back to it in the future. I'd support the Gamblers.
