For two years in football ODU didn't think it was a rivalry since we hadn't beaten them.
Karma is a beyotch.
I'd rather be rivals with programs that can actually beat us.
With their facilities, location, fanbase and history they will be back. I can’t stand them, but they will be, sooner than later I would think. The unfortunate health issues with Jeff Jones will be a catalyst for them to be moving on, which they need badly as a mbb program. I won’t sleep on them for sure.

Attendance was over 7600. And honestly, who really cares about what side the cameras face? The focus is on the court, not the stands. The AUBC was rockin’ and sounded great. Thumbs up to the student turnout. Coach By undefeated against the ODU losers.
Edit: Average home attendance for 2023-24 now over 5100.
I acknowledged it was packed, you know it was packed and rocking. Problem is that many more people tune in to watch a game than attend it, and our b-ball games on TV always appear 1/2 empty. After our game I watched that great Duke-UNC game Saturday night. Anyone else notice that humongous void of 4 empty sections behind the benches that were in constant view of the cameras?
As a regular viewer of the TV broadcast, I would say the bigger issue I have is the lack of great sound mixing. It seems they have the crowd sound overly dampened and it makes it sound like it's very quiet in there. It always shocks me going from watching on tv to then seeing some of the social media clips the team puts out and hearing how loud it actually gets inside the arena. If you compare a JMU broadcast to an ESPN broadcast there is a huge difference in the sound from the crowd.

TJ's father told me that he had an allergic reaction to something he ate. So, I am surprised he
was able to play at all. He warmed up in the practice gym before coming out. Another big plus
for having a separate practice facility.

Student seating needs to be restructured. You have one side with all bleachers where ~70% of students are standing and acting like a normal student section. Still several rows of students or GA that are sitting. Across the court everyone sits. It’s a mix of students and GA. Difference here is there are actual seats vs bleachers. Very strange dynamic with everyone mixed in together.
Student “club area” seems like a waste of space. Is it ever used? It was a good concept but doesn’t seem to serve a purpose. Part of the problem is it’s directly behind the “seated student/GA section. Might have been utilized more if it were on the other side where more students are.
Amazed me how quiet the arena was when ODU had possession. Granted we didn’t play well in the 1st half but it was still surprising. Got somewhat better in the 2nd half. Energy was night and day compared to the Radford game early in the season.

For the crowd engagement, I think it’s going to have to be a learned experience. Being at Utah State it was impressive to see how engaged their student section was then I thought, “Oh yeah, basketball school”.
If you told me 10 years ago (heck, even 3), if Bridgeforth would be rocking like it did the App game, I’d call you crazy. The diehards knew what was going on but so many fans and students would sit, cheer on offense, tons just tons of cringey mistakes. Now the BFS culture is where it needs to be, AUBC will slowly get there.
I agree on the layout. Just dumb. In crowds, feeling like you’re in a mob is part of the buy-in. To only have one section where you have bleachers and rowdy students, and the other it’s a calm chair back environment - you really dampen your best turnout demographic the students. Maybe it’s culture, maybe it was the lack of commitment in planning for what areas should be student sections, I don’t know. Bleachers make it easier for students to huddle together in a crowd. But is it the bleachers or the culture that makes the Cameron Crazies, I don’t know.

The bug zapper light put me in a trance when we hit big shots so it was hard to regain my thoughts and yell for our defense.

There needs to be 1-2 flat screens behind each basket facing the stands, that flashes instructions for the current cheer for the students/band so that everyone is on the same page. It would encourage noise, defense, jump up and down, etc…there could be one grad student that maybe would run the script and make sure both student sections would maximize a home-court advantage!
