Another great video Coach. I remember that terrific game as well. Thanks for sharing it.

Do you have anything on the ODU game where the other team came in with maybe the best starting backcourt in the nation? I believe it was St. Joe's and I'm pretty sure they were ranked coming in. I think the last names of the guards were Nelson and West. That was a good game, but I don't remember if ODU got the win that night.

ODU lost that game. I think Nelson hit about a 35 ft shot at the buzzer. Isn’t that the same game that Laughton scored 45 in a losing cause?

Unfortunately, I have no video from that game. It was November 29, 2003, and the #13 ranked St. Joseph's came to town, led by National POY, Jameer Nelson and his backcourt teammate, Dalonte West. (Nelson was the 20th pick in the following NBA draft, West the 24th).

St. Joe's had a 10 point halftime lead, grew it to 14 with about 10 minutes to play, but Isaiah Hunter hit a layup with less than a minute to play to cut the lead to 2, only to see Jameer Nelson hit a DEEP three with about 10 seconds to play to take a five point lead. The Monarchs got another layup, but that was it, and St. Joe's left with a 3 point win. The Monarchs were led in scoring by Alex Loughton who scored 24 points, which was the sophomore's career high until that point. (One week later, Loughton would score a new career high, 45 points, in a double OT loss to Charlotte.)

St. Joe's went on to a perfect 27-0 regular season, lost in the A10 tournament, but still had a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament that year, where they ended up losing in the Elite 8.

Thanks for the rundown on that game Coach. Those were exciting times for ODU basketball. My wife and I were there at courtside for both the St. Joe's game and the loss to Charlotte where Laughton scored 45. I remember Laughton hit several 3-point shots and was very strong on the boards in that Charlotte game as well.
This reminds me how good Ronnie Valentine was. He scored 44 against Tulane, on the road, no overtime, no three point shot then.

Alex was 5-5 from deep in that game and had 15 boards, so your memory serves you really well. 04-cheers

Interestingly, that brings to mind that Loughton wasn't the first Monarch in that season to make five 3's in one game, because in the season opener that year, at North Carolina, freshman Abdi Lidonde came off the bench to go 5-8 from deep.

I remember Abdi doing that and thinking we had a future all-conference guy on our squad. It didnt work out that way, but he sure had an amazing debut.

He wasn't all-conference, but he had a fine career, played on some really good teams, and was a great student-athlete. He still very much supports the Monarchs, and is making a difference in many lives now, as a Principal in an elementary school in Rhode Island.

I wish everyone that posts here could have seen Valentine play at ODU. Over 100 consecutive games he put up double figures scoring. He had a flat, line-drive kind of shot but it was so accurate. I believe that he also averaged right at 10 rebounds per game for his career at ODU. I saw him play for Norfolk Catholic during his senior year of high school and was very impressed with him then. I remember hoping that he was someone that ODU was looking at and then was really happy when I read in the newspaper a few months later that Paul Webb had signed him up to play for the Monarchs. He had a sweet 15 - 20-foot jump shot and could score inside as well.

Another guy that probably not too many on here got to see was Ricky Michaelson. I seem to recall that he too had at least one 40+ game at ODU. He was a big-time scorer in high school locally. He and Roy Ebron (I think it was) competed for the scoring title in the Hampton Roads area for a season or two. I think that Ricky played out at the beach - Princess Ann maybe, and I'm guessing that Roy played at Booker T, but that's just a guess from a long time ago so I'm probably off on that.

Seems like I remember Abdi being from up in the Northeast coming to ODU out of high school. Mass. or R.I.? Glad to hear he got a nice job and not surprised it's located in R.I.

I remember watching that game he had in the Dean Center to begin his career at ODU. Couldn't help but be excited about him after that game.

That was probably Abdis best college game.

Michaelson did play for PA and beat Roy Ebron for the VHSL State scoring title their Senior Year. I watched him score 69 points in his final game against Wilson (with Ebron also watching) and his HS coach was Leo Anthony (another former Old Dominion star). Then he played for ODU and was still a star with 45 points against nationally ranked Ky. Wesleyan (Coached by Jeff Jones Father). All that scoring and without a 3 point basket back then. Alas grades did him in at ODU and then he was gone (midseason as my old brain recalls). He was a pure shooter and for a while ODU's Pistol Pete. Oh, and Ebron did play for BTW.

I remember Michaelson’s freshman year we had a freshman team since freshmen were not eligible for the varsity ( the NCAA changed the rule at the end of that season). But we had an awesome freshman team with Michaelson, Joel Copeland, Jay Roundtree, Tom Street. They were as much fun to watch as the varsity. I think that year the freshmen only lost one game and that was the NC State freshman team that would in later years win the national championship.

Tom Street. A name you don’t hear mentioned much. A fine player!

Talked to the guy who has posted a lot of these full game videos on youtube last night and he said he has a bunch more on VHS. So I'm gonna test some stuff this weekend to see if I can convert them so we have more classic games available.

That team was soooo good. They had size, talent, could defend, could rebound, had depth, and they were well coached. I miss those days of ODU basketball.

EDIT: And it really wasn't that long ago.

Kent Bazemore, Chris Cooper, and Trian Iliadis...

...all coming off of the bench.

...and all better than anyone on our current team.

Not on this day, but since we already posted the Cleveland State that was a February 20th game, let me post this one instead:

Look we all know this season stinks but to claim that Trian is better than everyone on this team is just pure hyperbole. He was a decent role player, but if he was put into the same position as Chaunce (facing constant double teams) his career 30.7% from 3 would be even worse.

Absolutely. He played a role, and he played it well. I will say that everyone else that played meaningful minutes on that team was better at every position than the guys we have now., but no way Trian is better than everyone on this team.
