Future ACC MBB Tournaments -- And Other ACC Championship Events
@ByDavidTeel
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips announces men's basketball tournament will be played in Greensboro or Charlotte for five consecutive years, 2025-29. Longest run in N.C., since 1990-2000. Part of a package of dozens of neutral-site championships over six years in the state.

@chroniclesports
Durham will host the 2025, 2027, and 2029 ACC baseball tournaments, and Charlotte will host in 2026 and 2028.

The state of NC bought those tournaments when they agreed to give all that money to the ACC in exchange for selecting Charlotte as the new HQ. That contract REQUIRES a certain number of championship events in the state.

What were the other sites used outside of NC? Was some place else seriously considered?

Washington DC will host this year and previously hosted in 2005 and 2016.
Landover Md previously hosted in 1976, 1981, 1987.

Atlanta previously hosted in 1983, 1985, 1989, 2001, 2009, 2012.

Brooklyn previously hosted in 2017, 2018, 2022.

Tampa got their chance in 2007.

The Greensboro Coliseum, counting future scheduled tournaments, will have hosted 30 ACC Tournaments by 2029. Charlotte will have hosted 15 in three different arenas. Raleigh hosted 13 consecutive years 1954-66 but hasn't hosted since. You wonder why they haven't hosted, PNC Arena is an NHL arena. They don't want to give NC State home court during the tournament? It's not like North Carolina and Duke fans won't travel there.

Louisville wouid probably make for a decent alternative host site. Don’t care if it gives them a home court advantage.

I'm sure others will disagree but Greensboro is the perfect place for the ACC MBB tournament. The tournament DOMINATES Greensboro in a way that doesn't happen anywhere else. The tournament is swallowed up in Brooklyn or DC or Atlanta. When the ACC Tournament is in town you see fans of every school everywhere you go in Greensboro. Greensboro is an easy drive for fans of Clemson, Duke, Ga. Tech, NCSU, UNC, U.Va, and Va. Tech. There's no other city apart than Charlotte so convenient to so many ACC schools. I'm sorry Pitt, BC, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Miami, you're not getting the ACC Tournament in your backyard or in MSG. The Greensboro Coliseum was literally built to host the ACC Tournament. I've heard fans of more distant schools express surprise when attending the ACC Tournament in Greensboro that the venue is pleasant and works well for the ACC Tournament. The people in Greensboro try VERY hard to put on a good tournament and have lots of experience doing it.

The knocks on Greensboro are that it's too close to the ACC schools and that Greensboro isn't a big city. NC fans show up for the tournament in Greensboro which is more than I can say for home state fans in cities such as D.C., Atlanta, and Tampa. When I go to the ACC Tournament, I go to the ACC tournament. There's little time left over for bars and sightseeing. If you're not there for the basketball, why are you going at all?

Well We sure don’t have an advantage on any team currently with Our coaching staff that plays zero defense and only recently realized a point guard doesn’t have to be 6’8 while Your 6’10 center shoots 3 point shots . But yeah We host NCAA regional games and have plenty of Hotels, Restaurants, Bourbon, parking, close to airports and 3 interstates within blocks of Yum

Greensboro Coliseum is older than I am. Why not play in a newer arena like Charlotte or Brooklyn?

Because the main advantage of newer arenas is that they have more luxury boxes. That doesn’t matter to me. Does it matter to you?

Charlotte has a huge number of luxury boxes and as a result a huge number of crappy seats on the upper level.

There isn't a bad seat in the Coliseum

You are correct that the Greensboro Coliseum is an older building.
The structure has been expanded and remodeled several times. Interestingly when the capacity was expanded from about 15,500 to 23,000 special legislation was passed in the NC legislature that funneled all of the hotel/motel tax, and car rental tax collected in Guilford County (where Greensboro is located) to the maintenance/remodeling of the Greensboro Coliseum Complex.
Because of a constant flow of cash, the building is in a continuous state of remodel and is as up to date as any other venue in the country.

That tax money has also funded an amphitheater on the campus, the Greensboro Aquatic Center (where the ACC swimming championships are held as well as Olympic Trials), a Pavilion that contains a smaller basketball arena where the Greensboro Swarm (Hornets G-League team) play.

No, not a golfer.

There is no golf course on (or particularly near) the grounds of the Greensboro Colliseum.

No, one can't walk to a golf course from the Coliseum, but you could add it to your trip after the Gobblers bow out in the first round.
