Men's Tennis
UTA men defeated Ttech 4-1 this week, our first win over them in 23 years. Two of the Ttech players were ranked. Don't know how Mavericks compare to the rest of WAC teams, but this could be a good year.

Well done Mavs. The WAC is getting stronger in tennis. We beat Texas Tech as well. I like to see other sports, and not just basketball, being something the WAC is noted for. I hope our players have a good outing against our next opponent, the Air Force Academy.

My understanding from a few folks is that UTA will be the favorite this year to repeat as champs.

Back when ACU was ACC and UTA was ASC, I was on the tennis team, and we played against AFA. My sophomore season (before we had the name change to UTA) we defeated AFA something like 8 to 7. Back then, each doubles match weighed as much as each singles match. Anyway, Air Force brought enough players to fill up their T-29 transport, the equivalent of a DC-3 or Convair 440. For once, we had better depth to eke out the victory. Hopefully, AFA will bring a big airplane again this time to take on ACU, and it will be to your advantage.
Note: This was so long ago, none of the players on either team were non-Americans.

Great post, very interesting. Our tennis team certainly has more foreign born players than Americans. When I have talked to them, they always tell me how much they enjoy our country -- a nice thing.
That you were on the tennis team sounds great, I may have seen you play because I remember going to the matches. Basketball was my thing but close behind was baseball, tennis and golf. Problem was the BB Coach was pretty clear that I was there for BB period. Getting a very bad knee blown up ended basketball, so I returned to mostly tennis and golf. Lifetime sports are nice things to have. Hope you still play. Now I am so old I don't but I miss it.

You may recall, we had Trinity in our conference. They were perennial national champions, so the best we and ACC could hope for was 2nd or 3rd place in the conference tournament, except for the one year that the top three Trinity players were away at Wimbledon or Davis Cup matches. That year, Lamar won, as they had a very strong team with a couple of nationally ranked players.
Yes, tennis has been a lifetime sport for me. At 75 I still play a couple times a week. Like BB, there is some wear and tear on the body. Worst I've seen is what gymnastics can do to girls. Our daughter was an elite gymnast (an all-American at SUU). She has had a lot of leg, back and shoulder issues the last few years. But she still loves it, coaches and judges in AZ.

Fully agree about those Trinity teams of the past... They were great. You guys were very good as well. I am now 80 years old and athletics has led to at least five various surgeries, but I would not trade for those years of athletics. Knee, both hands, elbow, radius nerve. I sadly gave up golf this year.

Thought just crossed my mind, but when UTRGV leaves, the WAC will have four men’s teams. Is that enough for an auto-bid?

I mean, it's just the 13th conference title spanning three conferences in program history. We are a pretty good tennis school.
Plus there's little incentive for the conference to care like they did in basketball as well as the smaller ability for officials to dictate a match. It's not like you can call the ball out against the other team when he tripped over his own feet.
The bigger question is why GCU hasn't beat UTA, despite double the budget.

UTA versus GCU on the men's side and GCU vs. Tarleton St on the women's for the WAC title.
