I had the great privilege of hosting Dr Whitson as a speaker for Rice Engineering Alumni back in 2008, and my wife and I have been huge fans of hers ever since – in fact, her signed photo is proudly displayed in our library at home. Her objective accomplishments as an astronaut are incomparable, but I think the quality we most admire about her is her leadership. Within NASA she built a reputation as an outstandingly effective mission leader and commander, whose teams routinely performed at higher levels than any other crews – so much so that the success of her missions came to be known as “the Peggy Factor”. I actually wrote a short LinkedIn article several years ago about her leadership success, highlighting a Rice News release about her second mission as ISS commander:
