JMU men's basketball's Terrence Edwards is the 2023-24 Sun Belt Player of the Year, the conference announced Monday.

Edwards, a redshirt junior, averages a team-high 17.6 points per game on 43% shooting. He shoots over 35% from 3-point range, and he's an 81.9% free-throw shooter. Edwards does more than just score, adding 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He led the Dukes to a 28-3 regular-season record, which included a win over Michigan State.

Edwards becomes JMU's first POTY since Matt Lewis won the honor in the CAA in 2021, Mark Byington's first season as JMU's head coach.

Debbie Downer - CSU announcers had to share that the SBC player of the year fairs poorly in the tournament.

A very nice progression from 6th man of the year in SBC to Player of the Year. Congrats to Edwards, especially as noted - that this is more than the scoring. He generally distributes, play's defense, and has a great chemistry with Bickerstaff in particular.

Should this be his last year in a JMU uni, it is really hard to do better than be the player of the year.

Edwards’ rise/progression is truly remarkable. As a redshirt freshman, he went from playing 4 minutes in the win over UVA (12/7/21) to scoring 29 points on Senior Day (2/26/22). Followed that up by winning Sun Belt Sixth Man of the Year as a redshirt sophomore and Sun Belt POY as a redshirt junior. Well deserved recognition for Terrence!

That outlet has been spewing Byington to DubVEww for the past month and doesn’t cite anything substantial. Possible he goes there but it won’t be because they had the inside scoop.

I think the Edwards thing is just pure speculation as they seem him as a junior but he’s gone to play pro ball from everything I’ve heard from him. I had heard this was the case months ago BTW.
