Things are happening so fast with NIL that it’s hard to keep up. There’s now a
proposed 8 team men's basketball tournament in Las Vegas around Thanksgiving that would donate $1 million to NIL for each team in the tournament and $2 million to the winner.
You think “great, that helps my school pay NIL.” Yes, if your school is a high profile team that would get selected for this tournament or another that will pay like this. If your team is NCSU or Notre Dame you’re not getting into a tournament that will pay like this.
This is not just limited to holiday tournaments. What about neutral site games? What about home court games, for that matter? What about the ACC tournament?
And I haven’t talked about football. Wouldn’t this concept spread at least to neutral site games, playoff games and bowl games?
I don’t know how the ACC or any other conference will handle this. On the whole, I think the ACC will need to funnel as much money as possible in as equitable a fashion as possible to NIL but every conference will do this.
What I see is the rich getting richer in every way.
