Winning with Memphis players can be done. You just have to run a tight ship. Something Finch, Pastner or Penny haven’t done. If Calipari took a Memphis kid. He didn’t take $*!t off anyone.

That being said. I question how good Memphis talent really has been over the last 30 years. How many actual Memphis kids have made an huge impact on the NBA or even high level college basketball?

Finch didn't win with Memphis players? Checking the 85 final four team revels 9 Memphis players.

I am surprised Michigan put up with Howard this long after all his antics and sh*t.. Dusty May is gone, but all it matters is making it to the NCAA regardless of the conference.. As long as you dominate the conference, the rest is "noise".

Penny just need to fix his sh*t.. He did all the right things.. Played a strong OOC schedule, but something went wrong after Mills got injured and the late arrival of Tomlin.

BS, we were winning in spite of ourselves. And when faced with real competition Penny stumbled and under-achieved, just like he has every season since he's been here. Penny knows what's wrong, his ego won't allow him to admit his mistakes and fix them.

I am of the belief that you could never leave Shelby county and field a team to at least match the relevance we have been at the past 6 years

Agreed.

dude, it was one year.

Out of the 6 years he's been here which one was a resounding success? Our one NCAA appearance that we made it past the first weekend?

Any conventional coach could have done much more with the talent we've seen come in and out of the program over the last 6 years.

Unfortunately, it appears FAU will likely revert to norm. They have a low major gym and no plan to significantly improve or replace it according to FAU posters. Adequate facilities is a prerequisite for sustainable success

My siblings and cousins nieces and nephews live there— various places from midtown to East to north of Summer to near the campus around Park Avenue. No problems

And they have lived there for decades.

RE: Dusty May BOH
I live in Lexington.

I think here’s how things go down today:

The AD here (Barnhart) will tell Cal today if he wants to stay, that he must make changes that Calipari’s pride won’t let him be able to stomach. Things like forced staff firings and replacements he won’t have final approval to hire, including people hired to specialize in oversight of both practice and game coaching that he’ll be told he isn’t doing well enough (and even oversight of his schedule regarding when he’s at work — i.e., when and how often he’s physically at UK in his office, etc.) In other words, changes that will restrict his freedom to be Cal— unaccountable to anyone.

His ego cannot let him agree to anything like that.

I actually think the AD is so confident Cal won’t go for it, that there’s another coach hire already desired by the AD (with mutual interest already having been confirmed) that will be announced within the next two days to replace Cal.

Don’t want to act like I know for certain who that new coach will be, because I don’t. Can’t tell you I’m positive about what I wrote above. Just my gut. Have zero sources. Don’t have any friends in the know.

So everything I’m saying here could be completely wrong.

And if Calipari does his final UK radio show tonight, then everything above is out the window. But if an assistant does it, then I think what I wrote is the likely scenario.

And apologies in advance to anyone who replies they couldn’t care less anymore about anything to do with Calipari. I get it.

Who knows? Louisville might be where Cal is coaching next year. What a hoot that would be for UK fans.

I was just thinking through Louisville for Cal. Following his hero's footsteps once again. That would fit at many different levels.
Revenge to the UK admin
A storied program that is downtrodden
Louisville booster pride
ACC would fit Cal better
And Pitino!

85 was Dana Kirk I believe...I was young then but I think that's right. Finch never made a final 4. He did have 1 elite 8 and a couple sweet 16's. But his overall results were much like Penny's. Under performed with great talent. Would pull of big upsets and then lose to bad teams a week later. Take top 10 teams to the tournament and lose to Western Kentucky and Drexel.

Finch's first year was 86-87 season. We were on probation and made sure no Metro Conference team went dancing.

Went to the one in Biloxi. Tulane was just coming off probation and Perry Clark’s team had won maybe 4 or 5 games. When you came into the arena they were passing out Pom poms in various colors. All of the Memphis State fans got a powder blue and green one because Tulane was playing Louisville in the 1st round. Green Wave had more people cheering for them that day than they usually have at home games.

It would have been so awesome had that league sponsored football and held together, added the U, West VA and maybe ECU in the late 80s. Would’ve changed the fate of Tiger athletics forever.

Finch did have success with Memphis players. But it was very sporadic and inconsistent due to the nature of coaching local kids and having to deal with egos and family input always messing with team chemistry and creating a toxic environment.

I don’t have to make anything up about Tiger basketball. I have lived and breathed it for over 40 years.

I’m not sure it was the catalyst but when he lost…
Corey Bradford to Illinois (Big 10 Freshman of Year)
Robert O’Kelley to Wake Forest (ACC Freshman of Year)
Tony Harris to UT (SEC Freshman of the Year)
… it seemed to be the end of Larry’s tenure at Memphis.
