Huggiebear isn't coming to JMU, nor would he get an interview imo.

We are one bad decision back to the drawing board.

I really hate being negative about it, but this is damn frustrating. So much turnover in such a short time. It's hard to believe we hit a home run with everything.
So far Chesney appears to be an absolute home run.

Really want basketball to pick up where it left off, but with all the departures and now HC.... it feels like a rebuild all over again. And that's if we get the right guy.

Nothing wrong with not "even" being able to afford Pat Kelsey. Charleston is a solid mid-major that doesn't have football to spend money on, it'll likely take a P6 to lure him away and he may get that this year. There are plenty of other good options out there.

One I think could be an interesting possibility and that also would really ruffle some feathers is one of the rumored finalists from last time around: Dustin Kerns. He gets $300k a year, we could give him a solid raise and a job with better facilities and what should be a higher ceiling.

I kind of thought the same thing regarding Kerns. We'll pay more and have a higher ceiling, and Bourne has hired from a conference mate before (Cig).

Wouldn't be shocked if we reached out.

I second this! Just got to keep Huggy Bear away from a microphone and off the road! Fantastic Human and excellent coach. The other two would be fantastic as well, great track record and strong consistency. Not one great season and 3-4 OK ones, but all good/great. It easy as mid-major coach to have stellar season sandwiched into several average ones, that one gets him moved to a better job where he flounders. I love all three of these options.

Just looked at the list. Bob Richey was the first guy I thought of, but apparently his current salary is 2.2 per year. Not sure how realistic that list is.

Kerns or Hodgson from Arkansas State would both be solid hires. Bonus they would ruffle lots of feathers just like the Georgia Southern fans still upset about Byington.

RE: MBB Coaching candidates and rumors
The posters on this board have a better chance of becoming JMU coach than Kelsey during this coaching cycle. At moment he is in the mix at Louisville. Kelsey has pretty rigid standards for moving and as mentioned is already making 1.1 mill and living on Daniel Island in Charleston.

I hope I'm wrong.

It will be interesting what the salary pool is this time around for JMU. They knocked it out of the park with Byington. You'd hope this time around with the job elevated they'll be more resources to lure out the next great coach.

Someone like Griff Aldrich at Longwood seems much more in the wheelhouse of what is possible. He woudn't be a home run hire by any stretch but feels like an obvious guy who will be on the list.

Aldrich would be an interesting hire.
Radford U had a local kids school night a few years ago and they played Longwood. I remember being impressed with Longwood's coaching and there was no doubt that they had some legitimately good players on that team. I also remember how energetic his assistants were.
I wouldn't hate that hire.

Things change fast LOL.

Gotta think that means he knows that he will not be or that he may have another offer somewhere else.

Yeah, that could go either way.
If he's staying, good on him for responding so quickly.

Also makes me think that this hiring may happen pretty fast.

Can we start panicking and demeaning JMU's leadership on an hourly basis if they haven't hired a replacement in the next 24 hours? THIS MALFEASANCE ON THE PART OF OUR SO-CALLED DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS HAS RUINED JMU BASKETBALL FOREVER! That kind of thing.

I am relieved that JB is still around to make this hire? The new AD is setup well with this hire so they can settle into the role before having to make a huge hire.

Won't be surprised if we announce the next HC in the next 48 hours.

I'm sure the "sports news" bozos already have that covered.

Bourne has certainly had one hell of a last year as AD! He's earning his retirement, that's for sure.

I do wonder how long the admin has known about this. I have to think they've known for a while.
If so, hopefully they've already done the work of narrowing down the pool of candidates. Hopefully they bring in someone who can continue to elevate this program.

RE: MBB Coaching candidates and rumors
The administration obviously knew for a while this had a good chance at happening at end of season particularly once we made tournament. If you listen to Mark's presser either before or after the Wisky win you could see his demeanor had changed and he kind of hinted at it. Knowing Byington I'm sure he was upfront with team and JMU.

Lot's of good coaches out there, but Vermont coach would be my guy just because he does it every year. That said he hasn't left Vermont so maybe he really likes it there ala Tom Brennan.

C'mon. I like those guys. They may have a different opinion than you do, but at least they're out there creating content, dedicating their time and efforts to JMU. It's fairly entertaining most of the time.

I'm waiting for a couple guys to hit the portal so I can anger rant at Byington for destroying the program (even though it's not destroyed).

Please, whatever happens with this hire, just no “assistants” or alum hires. An existing, young HC, like Mike Morrell would be a good move.
