I assume any employee sore about how FedEx spends their marketing dollars in not going to be pleased no matter how they spend them...
There are short-sighted employees who might take exception to this, who can't comprehend that a $5M per year expenditure for a company with 500,000 employees comes out to less than $0.01 per hour of pay or perhaps a $10 annual bonus. They're the kind of employees who likely are not making critical contributions to FedEx's current or future performance. At least not with their math skills.
Successful business have to keep spending money on marketing, community involvement and strategic investments despite whatever near-term headwinds they are facing. Sympathetically throwing more money towards employees, especially those for whom there isn't enough work on the horizon, is never a good decision. I have actually heard FedEx employees in the past complain about billions spent on aircraft purchases, questioning why that money wasn't "given" to employees like themselves. Some people have a "pay me, then I'll start performing" mentality and then wonder why they never get very far.
The original person complained about layoffs not wages. If I got laid off and saw this contribution I would feel upset too. Nonetheless I'm ecstatic about the contribution.
I hope the original person does not watch any sports whatsoever and see how FedEx "wastes" money on NFL, golf, Nascar, and soccer sponsorships.
Just seems a little improper that FedEx is spending $5M/year while crying poor when it comes to their employees. Lots laid off and lots more to come soon. Had it come from the Smith family, that would be different.
Anyway, as a Tiger fan, I like the donation…
FedEx is undergoing a major financial reorganization. They know what they need to get their labor numbers to and they know what advertising numbers they have.
This is basically $1M/year coming out of their advertising budget.
They have to pay utilities, but nobody is complaining FE is paying their MLGW bill while people are getting laid off.
In order to make money from the FedEx deal, the athlete will do a promotional spot, whether its in print, tv, etc. They might advertise during the CFP and have a spot with Seth run during the broadcast ad rotation.
I understand how people might perceive spending this money, but the company understands what it's doing. And they have a reason behind what they do.

RE: Massive NIL Deal
i'm thrilled they are spending this money in Memphis instead of giving it to the Washington NFL team. As others have stated, probably not a coincidence that they ended the naming rights in Washington, and now Memphis has this huge NIL support.
