2024 Football Spring Showcase on April 27
Hopefully we get quite a few board members who can go to this tomorrow and post their observations. Looks like the weather will be great in DeKalb until late afternoon/early evening when the rain comes in but the events should be over by then.

According to latest HuskieWire article, Josh Holst may have supplanted Jalen Macon at backup QB as spring practice progressed.

A red-shirt freshman from Marengo 6-4, 195 pounds. A tall skinny kid. I can't find any rushing stats.

One note from Rivals had him listed as a dual-threat QB, though he was also listed at 6'3 and 170 lbs. So maybe he's already put on 20 lbs. but he'll need to put on more.

This was from 2022. His recruiting interests were FCS schools.

Holst is a passer. Appears to be a natural thrower. Would love to see him be a big time thrower. he has a great motion. Someone attended a recent practice (81?) and made the comment how well Holst threw it.

Maybe Hammock thought he was getting Josh Haldi.

Anyway, he apparently ran for 733 yards on 70 carries and 13 TDs in his senior season. Have no idea if he has any speed or what the competition was like.

He can run and has a nice arm. His high school mechanics weren’t great…also the dude had to have the worst OLine ever…even for high school. No idea of he sets then throws or not as his line never let him.

He had to be insanely hard to evaluate. He has a real natural arm strength though, you can tell he can really throw is with just a flip. Nice to have a QB who developed

Today’s projected time when they will run out of hot dogs: 10:10 a.m. Sometimes traditions are NOT a good thing!

2024 Football Spring Showcase on April 27
I remember the days when the “Spring Showcase” was an actual Spring intra-squad game. It was even broadcast on WLBK by good old Bill Baker. That only happened for a couple/few years, but it was well done. Certainly not like the big boys’ Spring games on national TV with 80K in attendance, but it was nice anyway.

Hampton staring down the TE and almost got picked off in the endzone. Stalled out in redzone on 1st drive.

I’ve got a Twitter thread going if you’re interested. Holst just led a nice touchdown drive. Couple nice hookups with McElroy

Hampton has looked Hampton like. Looks good but then threw 3-4 passes which could have been picked off.
Macon did nothing.

Honestly he’s playing with/against third stringers but I’ve thought Holst has looked the best

RE: 2024 Football Spring Showcase on April 27
- 1st drive with QB Hampton. Flea flicker completion on 3rd play gets them down into redzone area. Drive stalls when Hampton throws to TE in middle of field in endzone, almost picked off.
- 2nd offensive drive, QB Jalen Macon and RB Poe.
- Macon with two 1st downs on throws on his first drive. Drive stalled after two 1st downs around the 40-45 yd line.
- 3rd offensive drive with 1st team O: AB limping after being tackled/tripped on 2nd drive. Lynch with a 1st down rush along sideline. Rudolph drops a pass in 3rd and 5. Offense goes for it on 4th down and Hampton throws it into ground.
- QB Josh Holst on 4th drive of offense. Throws shoulder pass down sideline to Johnson and goes through Johnson's hands. Poe and Lynch on field at same time. Holst throws quick sidearm pass to Lynch for easy first down up the middle. Lampe with fist down pickup on 3rd and 1. Maclroy with nice catch diving to sideline. Then Maclroy #19 with TD catch in middle of back of endzone with one foot getting down. Holst made good decisions and patient on that drive.
- 5th offensive drive, Hampton back at QB. Hampton throws 2nd play pass behind WR along sideline for incompletion, now 3rd down. Hampton gets sacked by Oppong on 3rd down.
- 6th offensive drive, #14 QB Macon. 1st play ineligible man down field removes 1st down completion. Lynch back at RB, gains 5 yards on 2nd down rush. Now 2nd and 10. #81 Barnes wide open down left side of field, incompletion just slightly out of his reach.
-7th offensive drive, QB Hampton and RB Poe. 1st down play with defensive tackle in backfield. 2nd down sideline pass to Rudolph for a few yards. 3rd down incompletion down middle of field, nowhere close to receiver.
- 8th offensive drive, QB Holst and RB Poe. Holst passes to Lampe for 1st down. #6 on defense takes fumble for TD. Ball was punched out of Poe's hands.
- 9th offensive drive, QB Hampton and RB Lynch. Missed a couple plays talking to someone in the stands. Offensive at 35-yard line. Defense jumped offsides giving Hamptonna free play and he throws it 5 yards past his receiver down the sideline. Poe back at RB. 3rd and 5, Poe gets 6 yards in rush. 8 yard pickup by Rudolph. #87 falls before pass on 2nd and 2. Hampton rolls out and picks up 3 yards on a rush for 1st down. Playaction pass to Lynch for 5 yards. Another pass to Lynch for 5 yards and 1st down. NIU at 9-yd line. Hampton rolls out and completion to #88 for 6 yards. Lynch rushes for 1 yard on 2nd down. 3rd & 2 wildcat with Lynch stuffed. Going for it on 4th and 4. Lampe drops the pass in middle of field and drive stalls out.
- 10th offensive drive, QB Macon and RB Poe. Poe with 2 yard rush on 1st down. Poe with 4 more yards on another rush. Macon sacked on 3rd and 4 by #95. Going for it on 4th, Macon rushes out of pocket after few seconds and gets "tackled" after 3 yards. Turnover on downs.
- Short timeout before 11th offensive drive, QB CJ Jordan. 1st down stuffed on rush. #31 at RB. CJ Jordan rushes on 3rd and long but only picks up a few yards.
- 12th offensive drive QB Kenny Lueth. Makes a nice pass and huge pickup on reception by #85. Offense gets to 30-yd line. Short rush on 1st down for 2 yards. Another pass to #85 for 7 yards, now 3rd & 1. RB Poe picks up 1st down. Offense now at 14-yd line. Lueth with QB keep for 2 yards on 1st down. I have no idea what happened on 2nd down play but looked like Lueth fake pumped and tried to hand it to RB. Ball ended up on the ground. 3rd down scramble by Lueth. Didn't let them go for it on 4th down.
- 13th offensive drive, QB CJ Jordan. #31 (Gensler?) and Lynch both on field together. 2nd down lateral pass throws behind receiver. 3rd & 15, #39 on defense with pass breakup 15-yards down the field.
- Kickers come out on field now. 1st kick attempt by Woodill. Next kicker is #30 (Seibert?). Just #92 and #30 attempting kicks. #30 missed his 2nd attempt. 3rd attempt made by Woodill. #30 misses his attempt #3. Woodill makes 4th attempt for 50 yds. #30 makes his attempt #4 for 50 yards as well.
- Now offense starting from 25-yd line. QB Hampton and RB Brown. Jet sweep for 4 yard pickup. Pass to Brown for 1st down. Hampton pass to Lynch tor maybe 1 yard pickup. 2nd down rush for Brown, picks up maybe 1 yard. 3rd down pass INT'd by #1 (Prophete?) for TD return almost 80 yards. #87 on offense pulls a hamstring trying to chase down defender who intercepted pass.
- QB Holst on next drive. Holst completes 3rd down pass. Holst with keeper picks up 4 yards. 2nd down run by Poe for maybe 1 yard pickup. Poe stuffed for no gain on 3rd down. Offense going for it on 4th from 5-yd line. Pass incomplete in endzone. Turnover on downs.
- QB Macon on 3rd drive. 20-yd pass incomplete to Barnes. Looked maybe catchable. Poe rushes for 5 yards on 2nd down. 3rd down scramble by Macon picks up 5 yards for 1st down. Poe stuffed by #90. Macon long run towards sideline for 4 yards. Hand-off to Lynch on 3rd down for no pickup. Going for it on 4th down from 10-yard line. Macon pass down middle into double coverage broken up.
- 4th offensive drive, QB Holst. Rush attempt loss of 1yd. On 2nd down Holst fakes hand-off to Lynch and throws it to Lampe. Pass to Tewes for 1st down pickup. Holst with 2nd down scramble, gets a 1st down. Ball at 1-yard line. Lampe with rushing TD.

Hampton still not FBS starting material. Holst looked best at QB. I think we should be worried if these are our 5 QBs going into 2024 regular season.

Fret not! In Hammock’s brilliant offense, all the QB needs to do is hand off the ball and not drop it. It think with a bit more practice, our QBs will be able to do it.

Is there still time to bring in another QB or two?

On second thought, maybe the problem is not with our QBs. Maybe it’s with the receivers. Or the offensive scheme.

Think we’ll ever have a good offense under Hammock? Years of mediocrity under him. Just like the Bears. Think Caleb Williams will be the Bears’ savior? I think not. The QB can’t make up for the problems in other areas.
