Louisville hires new DC
Petrino & the UofL made it official this morning after the weekend rumors. Brian VanGorder has officially been hired.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbsspor...nator/amp/
VanGorder was the linebackers coach for the Atlanta Falcons during Bobby Petrino's one-year stint in the NFL in 2007. Previously the defensive coordinator at Georgia, Auburn and Notre Dame, VanGorder worked as an analyst for Kirby Smart at Georgia in 2016 and for Oklahoma State in 2017. In total, VanGorder has worked for 10 different college programs and three NFL teams in 37 seasons of coaching.
"I am truly excited about the opportunity to join the football program at the University of Louisville," VanGorder said. "Coach Petrino has built an impressive program here and I know that the culture that he has created here at Louisville is something that I believe I fit well with and will be comfortable in. I look forward to the challenge ahead and being a productive part in this successful program."

If this new DC lays an egg, Petrino's goose will be cooked also at Louisville. I am not impressed by this hire.

BVG's defensive schemes are so complicated that the Notre Dame students couldn't learn them, maybe the Louisville D will prove to be a lot smarter.

Best way to have great defense is keep it fast, smart, simple and hardnose as hell!

With Petrino's offenses being routinely ranked in the top 10, if not top 5, all you NEED is a mediocre defense to contend.
I guarantee this is the thinking from Petrino on this hire. This has never "gotten him over the hump", but it has put him close in the past. He's never stayed at one place long enough to see if, once he is close, he can get over the hump. Time will tell if this thinking is justified.
At this late stage, I'm ok with this hire. It's not like we were going to poach a high quality DC at another program. This guy has been at a pretty high level of football .... we'll see what he can do.

Hope He can at the very least teach anyone to finally tackle someone. This just hitting the opponent hoping He goes down hasn't worked very well in recent years.

Yeah ... sometimes ...
But the NFL has had it's fair share of high powered offenses just crushing the best defenses of their time ...
St. Louis Rams greatest show on turf ...
Washington Redskins super bowls were all with better offenses ...
Honestly, you need a balance of both. You have to have one side of the football to be outstanding. The other side needs to be serviceable.

RE: Louisville hires new DC
OK ... then who can you hire, at this time of year, who is realistic?
It's not a long list.
We were gifted the chance to hire somebody else when Sirmon bolted for a lesser job on the west coast .. Not only did he save us a buy out, it COST Sirmon $75K to do this.
This guy has experience. And is thought of highly enough to always wind up at programs with far greater tradition than we have at U of L ...
I'll see what he can do. It HAS to be better than Sirmon.
And I KNOW Petrino will have a very good to great offense each and every year.
We'll see ...

Honestly I would have promoted Whammy. He gets a ton of blame he doesn't deserve for the way the coots fell but when your head coach only pays lip service to recruiting you don't tend to attract the kind of athletes you need to compete in the NFL
or made an offer to Scott Shafer. Surely Louisville can out-pay MTSU and for all his faults as a HC he's a solid DC.
or take a chance on a couple up and comers like Newberry at Kennesaw State or Cooper at Austin Peay.
Any of the above would have been better than Van Gorder considering none of today's recruits can recall a time when he fielded a decent defense and all put out a much better effort at recruiting.

As an ND fan, all I can say after watching the Van Gorder 2016 debacle is....lotsa luck.
He was horrible at ND. The 2017 defense was much, much better after he was fired.

I was thinking Vic Koenning, defensive coordinator, Troy. He put together a top 25 defense there last season & has ACC experience.
Since you mentioned recruiting, Cort Dennison our LB coach was our top recruiter & is the biggest loss on this staff. Bringing in a high level recruiter maybe even more important than bringing in a high level DC.

Vic Koenning's defenses at Carolina were beyond terrible.
