nate...I know you know what the rucker league is and means. In no way is it great basketball, but it shows that more than a few people think NCM is a serious baller (mediocre....I think not) That was my point.

Yes, I know what Ruckers is. It emphasizes a strong value on athletic ability, which NCM has a ton of. NCM doesn't have a lot of skill, at all.

Was Juan Dixon ACC ROY? No, he was doo doo his freshman year.
And Damascus, you are the facking ignorant one, spouting off like you know the person behind Harry Potter.
PLEASE tell me how thinking that any of those players is better than Nik Caner-Medley is ignorant.
IN FACT, the only thing there is to support either way is rankings and all the players mentioned by him are FAR higher than Caner-Medley.
So shut your mouth, moron.
First of all, Juan Dixon wasn't even complete "doo-doo" his freshman year as he was a bench rider behind Steve Francis, you know the co-rookie of the year for the NBA. However, he did accomplish ACC POY which to me is much better than ROY. Anyhoo, the point to be made here, and you may be on to something nate... OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY. That is what will constitute who gets what award for ROY or POY. Just because you play for Duke or are a McD's All-American that plays for Duke doesn't guarantee a ROY or POY anymore in ACC country. Juan Dixon changed that last year as his own conference recognized who was the best. Who cares about his freshman year when it was his senior year that he showed the nation who was the best by winning a NC, w/o riding anyone's coat tails. I compare him to Battier and Cleaves from prior champions before. Juan deserves more respect than that.

Actually, to be technical, for most, if not all Dixon's freshman year he was trying to qualify.
Don't get me totally wrong, Dixon is one of the classiest player's I've ever seen grace a college court and I have a lot of respect for him. BUT, if he was as good as Damascus is claiming NCM will be, Gary would have found a way for Dixon to play. Whether it be splitting time with Francis or playing alongside him, he would have played. The fact is, it's very rare to find a top 75 player out of HS become ACC ROY, or even score 10 ppg. Could NCM be one of those very rare cases? Yes. Is it likely? Hell no.
The "experts" agree that Shavlik Randolph is one of the top 7 players in the nation. And... if he hadn't been injured this summer, he probably would be top 2. I'm not kidding, he was #1 or #2 in every ranking before his injury.
Fair enuff nate, Shav, if he gets playing time, will most likely be in the running for ROY... you're right on the qualifying stuff on Juan Dixon but it would be hard to overcome Stevie Francis on any team that year. NCM will be a solid player for the Terps but Garrison and Gilchrist are their best freshman coming in.
Being from PG county in MD I have to root for the hometown guy Garrison on this one.

Agreed. I think if any Terp gets ACC ROY it would be Garrison. I've heard that he's a little less athletic, but a little more skilled, version of Wilcox. Give him a year and he could be good.
McCray sounds like a Dixon-in-the-making. He's probably either going to be really good or really bad. As a Dukie, I hope the latter! jk
NCM will probably spell Randle, Holden and Garrison some time, but he won't be a huge factor. I think he'll drop 4 points, 4 rebounds and an assist or two next year.
From what I've heard, Gilchrist might sound like a bit of a headcase. This is just hearsay, but I heard he and Blake might have gotten into a little scuffle. Hopefully that is solved. He'll probably have a big role after Blake leaves.
Is this all of MD's freshmen? I thought there was a 5th? Maybe I'm just thinking of that JUCO guy, Jamar Smith.

I dunno about the Gichrist thing with Blake but I know he is very competitive.
UM recruited four freshman and a juco player, so you were right on that.
NCM will be a more impact player in his soph season, most likely.
You're definitely on to something here about McCray. He seriously just missed being a McD's All- American and he is considered by some to be a top 50 player. He shoots the lights out every night and has extreme ups, like Wilcox did. He is the sleeper of this bunch.
I think Redick is the sleeper for Duke. He was unconscious in the McD's All-American game.

I wouldn't consider Redick a sleeper. He was top 10 by a lot of rankings, top 15 in almost all.

NATE ...
just wondering...would you like to revamp our bet to include all Maryland newcomers vs all Duke newcomers? And before you start spouting off...I am in no way backing off my prediction of NCM, this just gives each of us a better shot at a victory...let me know.

Yeah but, he, for some unknown reason, is not getting a lot of recognition. I don't understand that. At least nationally, like Shav, Shelden, and Dock are. I think he is Duke's best all-around player, hands down.
So, IMHO, he has to be called the sleeper of the bunch coming in. :bang:
On other teams he would be "considered" the man.

yep
Is there some objective way to decide whose freshmen were better?
Like points + rebs + assists + blocks - TOs - PFs... etc?

too complicated...let's just stick to the bet.
Maryland Newcomers (Caner-Medley, Garrison, Gilchrist, McCray, Smith)
VS
Duke Newcomers (Dockery, Melchinonni, Randolph, Reddick, Thompson, Williams)
If one of these players wins ACC Newcomer of the Year, you or I change sig.
