Now wait a sec here.... you say that emotion is not an 'excuse'?
I say emotion plays a huge deal.....
Using your logic, that being fired up doesn't count... then let's see...
Troy State beat Marshall 33-24
Marshall beat Kansas St. 27-20
Kansas State beat Cal 42-28
Cal beat USC 34-31
That would mean Troy State obviously would whallop Southern Cal.
Look at your own conference. Do you honestly think Marshall was pumped up to take on Troy State?
Marshall beat KSU 27-20, Kansas State beat Troy State 41-5. Yet, Troy State beats Marshall.
How do you explain it? I say Troy State was fired up to play Marshall, Marshall was not fired up to play Troy State, game, set, match.
No excuses about it here.
MAC teams emotionally are pumped up to play the big boys. You have a huge respect chip on your shoulder, as has been clearly demonstrated in this entire thread. The BCS schools aren't nearly as fired up. Kansas State plays Nebraska, Texas, Colorado, etc. Marshall just doesn't stir their juices up like other, bigger rivalries do.
That's not an excuse. The BCS teams, if they have more talent, should win regardless. That's just fact. But it shows emotion does play a factor at times. 9 times out of 10 Marshall would've beaten Troy State, wouldn't you say?
You can't take one game against one team and use that for respect. I already said what it'd take for the Toledos and Marshalls to garner some serious attention. Drop the deadwood left in your conference (cough, Buffalo, EMU, cough), go and beat the LSU's, the VT's of the world consistently and by large margins, get bigger crowds, and move to a bigger conference. C-USA will be looking soon enough. If SMU can get an interview, certainly you guys should. That'd put you in a conference with some more $$$, TV coverage, and more bowl slots.
