Its about a block away from Wrigley...douchebag central. Not my favorite part of the city by a longshot, but there is a cool bar next door called The Gingerman if you're looking for somewhere to have a couple beers beforehand (outstanding jukebox to boot).
The venue is general admission, and theres a small balcony above. The only really crappy spot to stand is under the balcony..and if its sold out it will fill up that far back. Its a decent venue
Also bears mentioning that if there happens to be a game that night, the hood is going to be mobbed, and parking non-existent (its crowded on weekends due to all the bars to begin with).
Everything you said, happened for us. It was a game night and many Twins fans made the trip. Found parking on Paulina and Barry. Not too far away, but it took awhile. Ended up under the balcony. Thanks for suggesting the Gingerman. We passed so many bars (I dig the openness though) blasting loud obnoxious music. Cool bar and good beer, and yah good music was being played. My sister was shocked by the prices. I told her, "this isn't Cincinnati." One thing I noticed in the Gingerman, was a woman put a little sign on a table before she sat down which read, "Meet Here" on one side and "Chicago Indie Fans" on the other. I love the idea. I remember trying to find some couchsurfers at a bar in downtown Cincinnati and the only way to find them was to look for other people who were also looking around.
The show was good, not great. Metric played just about the entire new album and little else. Wished they played two or three older songs, but since I love the new album, I can't complain too much. I do love the band's energy and Emily looks like she always has fun at shows. "Dead Disco" was really the show stopper. I was pretty surprised at how small the Metro is. I really liked it though.
Went to see A.A. Bondy last night. Pretty nice show.
It was just him and his guitar and harmonica, and he called up the violin player from the opening act to play 2 or 3 songs with him. Did about 1/3 of the show out on the floor with the crowd.
I saw Shellac last weekend. It was sold out, but they let us in about half way through the set. Very interesting. Enjoyed the show, a couple great songs, a few so-so songs. Albini is as pretentious as advertised. The drummer is insanely awesome.

Are you serious? Which day did you go? I was there on Sat night.
Also managed to get the band to sign the poster afterwards.

Dyno, did you find a ticket? If not, you missed a really great time. The Jesus Lizard on Friday were far and away the highlight for me. David Yow is certifiably insane, thats all I can say.
And of course, the Flaming Lips.
Wayne came out in his bubble
The biggest shock of the set? They played Enthusiasm for Life!!! One of my all time favorite lips songs, and never performed live
The finale of She Dont Use Jelly/ Do You Realize
There were of course other greats set in between all of this. Some that come to mind are M83, Frightened Rabbit, DJ Rupture, and F*cked Up (I still have the bruises from that one). Yesayer was outstanding as well and had one of the best moments of the entire weekend...they played Sunrise during a rain shower and under some pretty black clouds, and at the very end of the song..yup you guessed it, the sun came out and the skies cleared. If that dosent give you tingles down your spine nothing will.
I also hit up Flatstock and made away with a pretty spiffy Deerhunter poster (click for big size)

I did find one, but ended up turning it down. Rough week last week and a Sunday concert didn't sound like a the best idea with having to get up so early on Monday. A friend hit Friday's show and said Jesus Lizard was awesome. I saw one song from the Lips on line. Looked fun. Glad to hear the good review.
Are you going to the Daniel Johnston show on August 15th at the Metro?

I've debated it, but Im probably going to pass. I do like some of his stuff, but I've heard his performances are extremely hit or miss (more often miss). And the Metro just dosent seem like the best venue for him.
I am however going to the Adventures in Modern Music fest at the Empty Bottle in September. Check out some of the bands, theres lots of good stuff there and a 5 day pass is only $50 (single days are also available)
Got tix for the Raveonettes/ Black Angels in October.
Got tix for Midpoint Music Festival (Cincinnati) http://mpmf.com/
About to by tix for the Seedy Seeds (great local band) playing on a Riverboat on the Ohio River. $20 all the beer and wine you can drink.
Damn,
I know I am getting old when I have not heard of 99% of these bands.......
Then again my Sirus radio stays on Margaritaville, The classic rock stations and country. We need one of these threads for old fogies like me. I can go from Buffett, to Pink Floyd, to The Boss, to Johnny Cash to the Stones, back to Kenny Chesney and be comfortable.
You can usually find me at WDVX's award winning Blue Plate Special Tuesdays thru Fridays at Knoxville's Downtown Visitor's Center (4 Market Square in The Square Room). Just look for Grizzly Adams, and there I'll be...
You can use that link to find WDVX's (listener supported - no commercials) online broadcast, if you like Americana music. It's a free concert almost every weekday @ noon...
Most of the musicians are local, or from the Nashville music scene, although there have been guests from all over the world. Matt Urmy and Half Doofus are there tomorrow, although I'm going to miss it that one. I have to be in Nashville...

It looks like the Groove Lounge has been dissolved . I thought the whole reason it got created was because people here got tired of seeing the ongoing music threads getting bumped
