Then again my Sirus radio stays on Margaritaville, The classic rock stations and country. We need one of these threads for old fogies like me. I can go from Buffett, to Pink Floyd, to The Boss, to Johnny Cash to the Stones, back to Kenny Chesney and be comfortable.

More power to you guys, keep on Rockin!

Check out Sirius-XMU. Channel 26 I think. Seems like you listen to everything, this channel has all different styles, but just underground, indie, and just all-around 'good' music. It might be tough at first, but if you appreciate music, you'll figure out what all to listen for in the songs and appreciate the variety.

Nice. My sister works for a minor league team. They bid on the concert but didn't get it. Too bad for me.

Last weekend, I worked a local city festival where The Verve Pipe and Creedence Clearwater Revisited played. First, I have a faulty memory of VP. I remember their big hit "The Freshman," but I failed to remember that they sounded like Blues Traveler. Not what I was expecting. Second, I've always had a problem with Creedence Clearwater Revisited. Just odd, yet they were a big draw. They were good musicians and all, but I wept a little bit for the Legacy of Creedence Clearwater REVIVAL. Ah well.

RE: Concerts
Im hoping to scroe tickets to this tomorrow.

Quote:According to Antiquiet, Dave Grohl told Mojo magazine in 2005, "The next project that I'm trying to initiate involves me on drums, [Queens of the Stone Age's] Josh Homme on guitar, and [Led Zeppelin's] John Paul Jones playing bass. That's the next album. That wouldn’t suck."

Four years and hundreds of rumors later, it seems like this no-qualifier-necessary, cap-S Supergroup is ready for its close-up. They've got a name: Them Crooked Vultures. (Via Antiquiet.) There's an oh-so-cryptic show listing for a post-Lollapalooza midnight gig this Sunday, August 9, at Chicago's Metro that features symbols for the Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, and Queens of the Stone Age. And there's also an official-looking website that links to Them Crooked Vultures hubs on MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. The Twitter lists Them Crooked Vultures' bio as "Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, John Paul Jones." Super and online friendly!

While a fall tour and new album are currently being whispered about, official spokespeople are keeping mum about Them Crooked Vultures at press time.

This should be epic. Or it could really suck

The music scene around Knoxville is listed on WDVX's Performance Calender. There are plenty of minor events that aren't listed too. There's music everywhere down here...

I don't go to a ton of concerts... but I'm going to Austin City Limits this year. I went last year and had such a good time that I bought a 3 day pass for this year's show without knowing the lineup. Anyway, are there any bands that y'all think I can't miss in this lineup? I have a few that I know I wanna see, but I'm always up for more input.

RE: Concerts
I caught a free Shellac show at Millennium Park's Pritzker Pavillion. Surreal experience to say the least, especially hearing "Prayer to God" being played in a downtown Chicago public park (look up the lyrics and you'll understand why). Also probably one of the best shows I've seen this year; i snagged a front row spot, pristine sound, unbeatable location, great banter...all in all a fantastic night.

http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/t...-park.html
Quote: Concert review: Shellac at Millennium Park

There was a surreal moment of theater that broke out Monday in the middle of Shellac’s concert at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.

Singer-guitrist Steve Albini was embodying the last radio announcer playing the last song on earth. To his left, Bob Weston played a funeral-dirge riff on bass. Behind them, Todd Trainer roamed the vast expanse of the Pritzker stage with a snare drum, a Puck-like muse for the announcer broadcasting into nothingness.

Albini signed off by invoking Studs Terkel, Ken Nordine and Jimmy Piersall, Chicagoans who defined their city through strength of a personality that could have been forged nowhere else. Shellac shares a few qualities with those greats, not the least of which is its individuality as a band. Love or hate them, Albini, Trainer and Weston sound like no one else.

All the more reason to hail their debut at the crown jewel of Chicago outdoor venues. The city has been notoriously averse to booking rock bands at Pritzker in past seasons, but that trend is slowly changing (thanks to enlightened thinkers such as Michael Orlove of the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs), and this summer there has been a groundswell of not only rock music, but cutting-edge rock music at the venue. On Monday, Shellac’s appearance drew an audience that filled the lawn and about half the pavilion, a landmark moment for the city’s vast independent music scene.

For 17 years, Shellac has been releasing albums at a leisurely pace and playing concerts in between the members’ day jobs (Albini and Weston are world-class recording engineers). Their music is rigorously orchestrated. Rather than creating a hierarchy separating lead and rhythm instruments, Shellac puts drums, guitar, bass and voice on equal footing. These elements drop in and out of the mix, with dramatic swings in volume and density. Albini manipulates sound and texture on his guitar rather than playing traditional “leads,” Trainer orchestrates the drums as much as he swings the tempos, and Weston’s bass sounds like it could double as a bulldozer.

The band worked through songs spanning its career, from early single “Wingwalker” to new, as-yet-unreleased material such as “Czar of All Czars,” with lyrics drawn from a workers union songbook. There were dramatic set pieces laced with bitterly comedic lyrics (“Prayer to God”), propulsive stomps (“Steady as She Goes”) and a lament about home wreckers (“Squirrel Song”). There were a greatest-hits of Shellac stage rituals (Weston’s question-and-answer sessions with the audience; the three-drummer, cymbal-bashing finale of “Watch Song”) and a few surprises, including a guest vocal by poster-artist extraordinaire Jay Ryan.

The fans, massed against the stage rather than confining themselves to their seats, loved it. The band, known for its combative personality, seemed to revel in the moment. And why not? The City of Chicago has not always been kind to its music community, treating it with indifference or outright hostility. But, hey, if Shellac can play the Pritzker, anything’s possible, right?

“Let’s let the City of Chicago know that they didn’t make a mistake,” Weston cracked. Amen to that.

Saw the Decemberists w/ the Heartless Bastards at the Egyptian Room @ the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis on Saturday. Check that, saw the Decemberists. Missed the Bastards, but I've seen 'em play plenty (not much with the new band though). Really wanted my Couchsurfing hostess to hear the Bastards but we we're boozing at the Rathskellar across the street. The show was pretty much awesome. Not a fan of concept albums, but they played Hazards of Love in it's entirety. I lack the attention span to hear the whole story and like most of the tracks as individuals (I mean it's not a far fetched assumption that any of these songs couldn't be on any Decemberist album). Hearing Becky and Shara's pipes were a special treat. Felt a little bad for Jenny, as her voice is equally a treat. The crowd was great, hardly any talking, lots of participation. They played two sets, one Hazards and an excellent four song set, plus the encore. Jubilation. One band that I can cross off my to see list.

RE: Concerts
I saw Daniel Johnston Saturday night. Overall, the show was great. He started with just him and a guitar. His guitar playing was rough and a bit distracting, but after a few songs, he put his guitar down and brought out a guitar player (forgot his name, but he's an old friend of Johnston from college and I think might be in the film). They sounded great together and performed some beautiful songs. They ended the set with an inspired version of the Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away." They took a short intermission and both returned with a full band, which happened to be the band that opened. Their opening set blew, but they worked well with Daniel Johnston. That lineup finished off the second set. For the encore, Daniel Johnston returned with just his guitar playing friend and performed a beautiful version of "True Love Will Find You in the End." Lot's of emotion . . . the dude behind me was crying.

Caught Incubus in The Woodlands, TX Friday night. The only person in front of me and the stage was a security guard.

Went to see The Features last night in Chattanooga. This place was TINY and the floor would shake, no BOUNCE, with the drummer. They were just having a blast up there. The drummer reached out and offered some girl by the stage a piece of gum at one point.

These guys are one of my favorites and I don't understand why they aren't huge. They're not Indie or anything, just solid rock that can appeal to the masses. No cursing, and songs about him loving his wife, trying to make things work after splitting, and his twin girls growing up. Solid songs if you're looking for something.

I would have killed to see this....

Rhys Chatham- A Crimson Grail, for 200 Electric Guitars

http://www.tinymixtapes.com/Rhys-Chatham...-Grail-for
Quote:Two distinct forms of minimalism filled the Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park Bandshell on Saturday night, as did an estimated 10,000 people eager to hear the evening’s momentous sounds.

First came the world premier of composer Rhys Chatham’s A Crimson Grail for 200 Electric Guitars, a massive piece in three shimmering movements and its orchestration of 200 electric guitars, 16 basses, and one hi-hat. Rather than creating a blaring, dense wall of noise, Chatham’s guitar orchestra was a shifting, sparkling ocean of tonality. Chords rose and fell, meshed and crystallized, and ultimately congealed into a vibrating, magical marriage of dissonance and harmony, multiplicity and unity. The 217 players (a few TMTers included) weren’t a raging army of axe-wielders, but smaller and subtler parts of a larger collective instrument. From the bandshell stage, Chatham lead the impressive affair with the help of four section leaders perched atop platforms in the crowd. Trying to decipher just how he was guiding the piece was tempting, but closing one’s eyes and letting the vibrations take over provided much more satisfaction.

Dr. Dog
Coheed and Cambria (though I hear I should have gone to Phoenix)
K'Naan
Reckless Kelly
Them Crooked Vultures (Bad. Ass.)

Flogging Molly
Zac Brown Band
Dave Matthews (1st Dave show and I loved it!)

Sunday

I'm tired and muddy, but I'm definitely going back again next year. Great experience.

Just got back from Nashville's St. Vincent and Andrew Bird concert at the Ryman. I think all Andrew Bird songs sound the same, so I was kinda upset with how short St. Vincent's set was. But, Bird was sick and still put on a great show.

They both kept talking about how amazing it was to be playing at the Ryman, which is why I love seeing shows there. Folks always seem to put their best foot forward when they play it.

They had a pretty good encore set with both bands together. I just kept wanting more St. Vincent I guess.

Gots Blitzen Trapper and Raveonettes this month! And then Bishop Allen and Why? next month!

I really wanna see Andrew Bird play. I had no idea he was so intra-smental. Play on words? And I coming around to St. Vincent. Jesus Saves, I Spend, is a pretty neat track.
