I have a 32" 4:3 that converts to 30" 16:9 during HDTV programming, and it seems small. Of course, I do have a 110" HDTV projector in the basement that helps makes things seem smaller.
what brand projector do you have?
I use to have an Infocus 4805 then the IN72 version in a basement room, and got about a 130" screen out of it, great for HDTV and movies. and cheap compared to Plasmas and LCD's at the time, plus the size difference.
Now I've moved, have a smaller room so got a Sharp DT-510 720p pj for like $500 bucks last year, it throws a great image. I'm 11ft back and letting it throw a 100" screen(which I built from a kit on ebay, .looks good). Blu-Ray looks awesome on it too.
After this one wears out I plan to upgrade to a 1080p Projector which should be down in price by then.
as for Plasma, I got a 50" Samsung A510 in January for a good deal, though new models are getting cheaper. Unless glare is an issue I'd stick with Plasma over LCD. Kuro is the best, Panasonic is taking them over and Samsung makes a good one too.
Vizio is on way up and the best budget alternative.
And if you have a 32" 4:3 TV and replacing with a widescreen, bump up to atleast 40". 32" flat screen is a step down in size.
You can learn alot about this stuff at the AVSforums
