Atlantic 10 becomes 10 schools again
It's been a long time since the A10 had 10 members.
But with the impending departure of current basketball members:
Temple
Charlotte
Butler
Xavier
St. Louis
Dayton
The A10 will soon have 10 members (appearances in NCAA tourney from 2003-12 in paren):
VCU (2012, 2011, 2009, 2007, 2004)
Richmond (2011, 2010, 2004)
St Joes (2008, 2004, 2003)
GW (2007, 2006, 2005)
St Bonaventure (2012)
UMass
LaSalle
Rhode Island
Fordham
Duquesne
That's 15 combined bids in 10 years. VCU and LaSalle have a chance this year.
So the A10 will become a 1-2 bid league?

I would think that VCU would be wanting back in the Colonial about now.

Why A10 is still better and it's easier for the A10 to just add Northeastern, GMU. Plus they'll probably add 2 of Detroit, Siena, Davidson(if they still want in NC)
JMU has a very good shot at being added to the SBC along w/ App St., Ga Southern, making the CAA & SoCon less appealing.
MVC is a tough one, non fb would be Belmont, Oral Roberts, Denver, and the much hated by MVC guys SDSU, NDSU who they claim are not options.

Because they just left all their local rivals behind for a conference that was the top non-football conference around and now is at-best the second non-football conference. The money probably isn't looking as good now either. They will be traveling the Northeast a lot more instead of close trips to VA, NC, Deleware, Maryland etc.
Seems that the CAA plus Richmond would be ideal for them now.

The CAA really cratered this year. I mean, they are the 24th best conference the last I checked. I don't see the CAA as a viable option at all. To give you an idea of how bad CAA is- I saw a bracketology where the CAA champ was in the play-in game.

It won't happen, losing rivals is every school that moves now it seems. TV is better in the A10 and #2 is still better than 5 or 6, whatever the CAA is. WCC or MVC is probably #3 & 4

RE: Atlantic 10 becomes 10 schools again
Here's the answer:
VCU 22-6 34
La Salle 19-7 38
UMass 17-9 57
Richmond 17-11 72
St Joes 15-11 80
GW 12-14 145
St Bon 13-13 112
RI 8-18 193
Fordham 6-22 231
Duquesne 8-19 218
avg 118
---------------------------
Northeastern 19-10 137
Towson 16-13 151
Delaware 17-13 144
James Madison 16-14 221
George Mason 17-12 154
Drexel 11-17 205
William & Mary 12-15 242
UNC-Wilmington 9-19 296
Hofstra 6-23 322
Charleston 20- 8 156
avg 203
that's right the average of the A10 is stronger than the BEST CAA school....

When Delaware is near the top of your conference you know you've cratered, lol.
With the CAA and A10 both looking at a future membership of 10 I believe the A10 almost has to expand by 2 (within the footprint) to maintain the hierarchy. George Mason and Northeastern will do that for the A10.
The A10 can't afford to mess around with Detroit or Loyola to try and take things back into the Midwest. That strategy worked with Dayton and Xavier but those are huge names.

It's a shame, I love the A-10 but it will just add from the other basketball only conferences. It's still the best optionsfor almost any non-football school in the east.

I'd say a sleeper in this-
Loyola(Md). 20-9 RPI of 94 this year. Fits the footprint to a T- gets them into Baltimore.

RE: Atlantic 10 becomes 10 schools again
i unfortunately agree. if the projected schools leave here is your new a10 breakdown
umass, uri, fordham, st. bony, duquense, **northeastern/hofstra/stony brook/siena
la salle, st. joes, vcu, richmond, george washington, **gmu
that is a very nice division for vcu. just as travel friendly as the caa would be. only school they would miss is ODU which is not realisitic due to FBS football.
I am hoping the CAA uses this to move further south and can now entice davidson to come and bring a friend or two

I would say the A10 will be a regular 2 bid league (3 on occasion) like the Missouri Valley Conference and less of the kind of league that can pull in 4 or 5 bids.
George Mason would add another 3 NCAA appearances into that mix (2006, 2008, 2011) plus add a school of 32,000 students.
CAA is ripe for the picking with a few programs that have FBS aspirations (Delaware, JMU, Towson).

UMass joins the MAC full on.
The A-10 adds BU, Siena and George Mason.

RE: Atlantic 10 becomes 10 schools again
BU just joined Patriot and seems to be emphasizing lacrosse. With the A10 likely down to ten Siena and GMU would be logical 11 and 12. Northeastern would be a good replacement for UMass should they ever leave.

BU is going to the Patriot and I expect UMass will do whatever they can to avoid joining the MAC as a full member since that would be worse than their current A-10/MAC arrangement. The other two are likely on the A-10 short list.

Yeap, the CAA is horrible this year. The worst I have seen in a long long time.

UMass is also on the short list for joining the Aresco League when the next defection comes around so I doubt the MAC would go that route. A lot of MAC presidents are cool to the idea of adding an all sport member located so far away.
The MAC may be able to get Delaware all sports though since they'll be left hanging back in the CAA if GMU and JMU leave. Delaware would be a mid level MAC program in FB/BB but would get the votes from the MAC presidents because of academics.
