I was just wondering what the football revenue is as a % of the total. Anyway, You're looking at something like $15,000,000 in revenue per home game, which has to be at an NFL level. Just a crazy number - probably around $150-$200 per person attending the game. I know a ton of other crap is driving the revenue besides attendance, but still.

Put it like this, if UofL was in the Big XII only Oklahoma & Texas would have larger athletic budgets/revenues...in the ACC only UNC...in the B1G it would be Penn State, Wisconsin, Ohio State & Michigan...Pac 12 it would be Southern Cal...in the SEC it would be Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Arkansas & LSU as of 2012.

Pretty remarkable considering that the BIG EAST as a league doesn't produce the type of revenue as the Pac 12, ACC, SEC, B1G or Big XII. 04-cheers

Oh I know we're in good company overall. Texas is just off the chart.

Kind of makes it clear why football is the driving force in realignment.

1...no Texas Football makes way more then Louisville basketball but Louisville Basketball as compared to it Football counterparts still would be in the TOP 25.

2...just showing there are different revenues that a university can make.

3..the reason why Football is the driving force has a lot to do with the fact that the NCAA take the bulk of the Basketball $$$ for themselves...the conferences keep the Football $$$…goes back to the old CFA Days 07-coffee3

Good points in this discussion. Let's look a little closer.

1. Football and basketball programs have no inherent value because they are not commodities that can be bought. Forbes created a formula to give them an artificial value for comparison purposes only.

2. The meaningful number is not the arbitrary dollar value assigned by Forbes, but the actual profit turned by any given program. In that regard, we see the following:

a. Texas football profit = $78 million in the most recent year
b. Louisville basketball profit = $24.7 million in most recent year
c. Wisconsin football profit = $$24 million in most recent year (rank: 14th)

In other words, Louisville generated a bigger profit from basketball than the 14th most valuable football program. The schools in front of Wisconsin included 2 from the Big XII, 3 from the B1G, Notre Dame, & 7 from the SEC.

That does not explain at all why football is the driving force in realignment. It explains why it is the driving force in the SEC and to a lesser extent in the other 2 conferences. Most universities are not Texas, or Michigan, or Notre Dame, or the SEC. Most universities will never be capable of producing the revenue that these schools do. There are unique circumstances to each of them.

Football by itself is not a magic elixir. Many schools have a far better shot at producing revenue with basketball and without the enormous expenses that accompany football. A few dozen schools can do something special with football.

Out of this group of usual suspects who complain about being left out, UConn is the only one with a truly winning argument.

Pretty remarkable considering that the BIG EAST as a league doesn't produce the type of revenue as the Pac 12, ACC, SEC, B1G or Big XII. 04-cheers
