That capitalizes on the rivalries the best of any alignment anyone can come up with. I already broke down the divisions above too. They are very even if it is done this way.

Others can come up with whatever crossovers they feel work, but this alignment is the way that actually makes sense. People shouldn't have to think about which teams are in which division. It should be common sense by looking at the map. Miami belongs in the South too but that is a compromise to keep a school in Florida in that top division.

Like I said, it is fine with me. But what are your thoughts on how Tech, UVA and Miami are gonna feel about this? I think they would flip out... I would like to get some of their thoughts as well?

As a VT fan, I don't think it's going to happen. There is no talk of realigning divisions at all, except on this message board. It's a non-issue.

Miami can complain because of geography. They are the Southern most team.

Virginia can complain due to the other division being all of the older ACC except them

Va Tech has no right to complain. They are in the Northern division geographically and have only been in the ACC since 2004.

The way I look at Miami is that they pretty much have to fly everywhere anyway, and their local airport probably has better connections than any except Atlanta.

The Big10 is going east/west, going to 9 games, and not having permanent crossovers. So you'll cycle through the other division every two to three years.

If FSU wanted to give up the Miami game and go to 9 games then I'm sure we could start to talk about North/South alignments.

That's because the Big 10 got all of the good rivalries into their divisions. Miami would be the compromise because schools would want a Florida school in their division. Really they would be in the South.

Actually if you went to the Big 10 format, FSU/Miami would be the only protected crossover just as the BIg 10 said would happen with Indiana/Purdue. They protected the one inner state rivalry that would be split.

The North/South split makes perfect sense for keeping the most rivalries going in the ACC. It eases travel costs. It makes the divisions easier to comprehend. Seriously the ACC is the only league where some fans don't know who the hell is in each division. This is because it is the only league where the divisions make absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Your school is actually one of the few that would fight this despite you acting like this is only an alignment FSU would like. All of the schools in their division would like it. All the BE schools coming in like Pitt/Cuse/Louisville plus BC would like to be with each other etc. Va Tech wants to leave past rivalries behind and play more in the South but that isn't the best alignment for the league.

The divisions make sense to anyone with a brain.

A north/south split would increase travel for everyone not named FSU. It isn't just VT that wouldn't go for that alignment even though we "have no right" to not be in the north. If you had done any research at all you would see that VT's history is with the schools in the south, not the north. They've played UVA, FSU, Wake, UNC, NCSU, and Clemson the most.

The thing about n/s that makes zero sense is trying to say that it is about geography and then sticking Miami in the north. The other thing that makes zero sense is trying to seperate the Virginia schools from the NC schools. The other thing that makes zero sense is putting four schools from one state in the same division. Not even the PAC12 managed to do that. The B12 tried that setup and it lead to their destruction.

If you can't remember which teams are in each division after 9 years then you probably don't follow ACC sports anyway.

I'd like to see your calculations on travel being increased for everyone not named FSU. That would be interesting. How would Clemson's travel be increased for example? They would be adding 2 NC schools and a Georgia school to their division while subtracting a team from Boston, MA Syracuse NY and Louisville KY. That is some funny math you are using there to say the least...

The Pac 12 didn't put 4 schools in one division because they went North/South. Again, look at the map.

BTW: It is quite hilarious that you are fretting about VTech being separated from the NC schools. Yet you don't see the big deal and FSU/GT not being in the same division and going 10 years without playing each other.

The only two divisional setups that make sense are the current, and North/South. Like I said in my earlier post, the only way for UM, UVA, and VT to go for it is with a 9 game conference schedule. Which means Clemson, FSU, and GT would also have to take on for the team.

If you look at the map you'll see that you have to split one out of NC to go n/s.

If GT had any interest in playing FSU they would have moved already. They want to be in the Coastal. Pretending you have a rivalry with them is stupid.

GT is 268 miles from Tallahasee. Blacksburg is closer to all 4 NC schools than FSU is to GT.

The only problem with the current alignment is an obscure rivalry between GT and FSU. To fix it, some think that decades of history between the VA schools and their southern conference mates should be discarded to play in a division with teams they have no history with.

FSU has only played GT 23 times.

VT has played...
NCSU 48
Wake 36
FSU 36
UNC 36
Clemson 33
Miami 30
Duke 20
GT 10

BC 21
Syracuse 17
Pitt 12
Louisville 7

UVA has played...
UNC 117
Duke 64
NCSU 57
Wake 48
Clemson 46
GT 35
FSU 17
Miami 10

BC 5
Pitt 5
Cuse 4
Louisville 2

Compare to FSU having playedn the northern teams:
Louisville 14
BC 10
Pitt 8
Cuse 6

FSU has much more history with the north than UVA has.

RE: Big 10 Realigned with their 14 team league....
I'd like to see the math 4 x4. You are the one saying travel would increase for everyone not named Florida State. All I see are generalities on Va Tech solely and you dodging the question rather than having any substance.

I'd like to see how Clemson/NC State/Wake would travel more to UNC/Duke/GT than Louisville/Boston College/Syracuse

I'd also like to see how UNC/Duke/GT travel more to Clemson/NC State/Wake/FSU instead of Miami/Louisville/Boston College/Syracuse.

And I'd like to see how Pitt/Louisville/BC/Syracuse being grouped together hurts their travel as well.

Miami flies everywhere so travel really doesn't matter to them. Just going hours in a different direction.

So I see 11 teams of the 14 that I actually think would save on travel. Miami flies all the time so really doesn't matter who is in their division because they are an outlier.

In other words, UVA/VA Tech having more travel now equals 13 of the 14 teams not named FSU having a harder time traveling. Yep makes perfect sense....

As for your numbers on FSU having more history with the North than UVA, they are negligible. Louisville they have a tiny bit more history. The others are 1 to 2 games difference. The only difference being BC and that is because they have been in the same division as FSU for 8 years. Before that FSU played them 2 times......

Honestly if they swapped Louisville and GT though, I wouldnt' be mad. Think N/S makes more sense especially for travel and tv but at least GT woudl be with us. And yeah I am sure GT doesn't want to play FSU every year. They wouldn't want to play a team in a neighboring state with a great fanbase, great national draw, and one of the best football programs in the ACC. Sure.....

I would not be surprised if swapping GT to the Atlantic division comes up at the next ACC meeting, especially in light of this Big Ten change. It could go into effect when Louisville joins in 2014.

If they swap, what would the crossovers be?

You probably leave most cross-overs as-is, changing just the 2 pairs. Which pairs depends on which team swaps w/ Ga Tech... I think there are 3 logical choices, each with its own pros & cons: BC, 'Cuse, and UofL.

If you swap... the crossovers affected would be
Swap BC for GT --> BC/Clemson and GT/VT crossovers
Swap SU for GT --> SU/BC and GT/VT crossovers
Swap UL for GT --> UL/Clemson and GT/VA crossovers
