I see Louisville having football rivalries with Miami, FSU, Clemson, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame.

I see Louisville having basketball rivalries with Duke, North Carolina,Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame.

Louisville and Syracuse will be strong rivals in the ACC, their match ups will be can't miss games. But so long as I respect them, it will be hard to ever view them as an archrival.

Exactly. UL won the CBB NCG and the Sugar Bowl against #3 UF, so they are clearly very good, and they have one of the most profitable athletic departments in the country, so they clearly have a strong following, but UL and SU will never be arch rivals. UL is around #10 on my rivalry list,* and I don't see SU cracking UL's top 5 either.** SU v. UL are rivals in the sense that SU and FSU will be football rivals when SU is "on" again.

*UL is after Georgetown, UCONN, Villanova, Boston College, Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, Miami (admittedly this is one way), Notre Dame (admittedly this is one way, but ND is America's rival, so it would be dishonest to not include them, even though Syracuse hasn't played them many times), Cornell (lax and snobby body bag basketball/football games), Johns Hopkins (lax only), Virginia (lax only), and St. John's (when they're "on").

**I would be amazed if the average UL fan sees SU v UL as being a bigger deal than UL v Memphis, Cinci, WVU, UK, (insert B1G school in the general area here), and possibly ND.

i think cuse and ul fans have mutual respect for another... doubt any team in the acc will fit georgetown's bill - hope cuse still continues that rivalry

UL /Syracuse games will never fail to sell out as most fans know those match ups are always Barn Burners in BB and have gotten much better in FB in recent years.

There were articles stating such when Pitt and Cuse agreed to join and adding ND reduces the number of possible home-away pairings. So I don't see why they would suddenly go to 2 permanent partners. It had to do with getting the new members more acclimated to the league.

That rings a bell now that you post it. I forgot about that and disagree with it. With so many schools we need to have as many rotating games as possible.

It really has to do with the math. 15 schools can't have one partner each without someone being left out so they went back to two partners each.

To be fair, UL v anyone on the east coast and SU v. anyone on the east coast usually sells out. Both schools have a zillion fans and both schools are big name teams that are worthy of causing other teams' fans to come out of the woodwork.

However, it is worth noting that UL @ SU has never sold out in either football or basketball. UL fields great teams and has excellent fan support and a storied tradition, but UL isn't Syracuse's rival, and I don't think that SU jumps to the front of any UL fan's mind when they think "rival." I'm guessing that's UK, UC, or Memphis.

To be fair, its very hard to sell out the Carrier Dome, because it can seat over 35,000. But I thought that Louisville last game in the Dome was a sellout. If not, I am sure it had at least 30,000 fans there. I dont think Uconn nor Nova were sellouts the last time they played in the Dome either. But they are definitely rivals. According to the following article, Uconn has never sold out the Dome.

Dome Sellouts 2013

My post was mostly aimed at addressing that specific statement. However, you're right that the dome is very hard to sell out, and I didn't mean to imply that UCONN or GU games always sell out, or even sell out on a regular basis.* My point was more that teams like 'Nova, GU, and UCONN have before, and I think that is a strong indicator of rivaly status. Admittedly it isn't the only indicator, but I think that it is a good indicator. IMO, if a rivalry exists, two basketball programs with elite followings should be able to sell out at least once in the rivalry's history. Now we haven't been playing for all that long, so maybe I am being unfair, but I think that rivalries are based off of more than just talent. There has to be a cultural or geographic component, or at least a reason to despise. SU v UL doesn't really have any of those.

*I know that you never accused me of implying that, so forgive me for putting words in your mouth.

I can't help but wonder if that is the BE punishment to Cuse for leaving for the ACC.

It's not just the capacity, it's the ticket price. SU could sell out more regularly if it charged a lower price for those tickets in the opposite end of the football stadium. Instead, they charge $40 plus Ticketmaster fees per ticket.

$40 for a ticket to a BASKETBALL game? In a dome? No, thanks!
