Louisville and Syracuse will be strong rivals in the ACC, their match ups will be can't miss games. But so long as I respect them, it will be hard to ever view them as an archrival.
Exactly. UL won the CBB NCG and the Sugar Bowl against #3 UF, so they are clearly very good, and they have one of the most profitable athletic departments in the country, so they clearly have a strong following, but UL and SU will never be arch rivals. UL is around #10 on my rivalry list,* and I don't see SU cracking UL's top 5 either.** SU v. UL are rivals in the sense that SU and FSU will be football rivals when SU is "on" again.
*UL is after Georgetown, UCONN, Villanova, Boston College, Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, Miami (admittedly this is one way), Notre Dame (admittedly this is one way, but ND is America's rival, so it would be dishonest to not include them, even though Syracuse hasn't played them many times), Cornell (lax and snobby body bag basketball/football games), Johns Hopkins (lax only), Virginia (lax only), and St. John's (when they're "on").
**I would be amazed if the average UL fan sees SU v UL as being a bigger deal than UL v Memphis, Cinci, WVU, UK, (insert B1G school in the general area here), and possibly ND.
