Rice Stadium, Houston, Texas, "IS" a big time stadium.
I even saw a couple of Houston Oiler games there and one against the Kansas City Chiefs who had former UNT Mean Green All American Abner Haynes on their team. (The late KC Chief's owner and SMU alum Lamar Hunt always called Abner Haynes the AFL's first superstar). NOTE: The Oilers played a couple of years at Rice Stadium when they couldn't work out a deal with Judge Roy Hofheinz to move their games to the Astrodome AND.......I saw the 1966 Bluebonnet Bowl game at Rice Stadium when Darrell K. Royal's Texas Longhorns led by QB Super Bill Bradley, Chris Gilbert, Ernie Koy, Jr., etc, etc, etc, beat Ole Miss 19 to 0.
Rice Stadium was also where I saw my first ever college football game as 11 yo kid from nearby Danbury, Texas, back in about 1962.
President John F. Kennedy had his "we will have a man on the moon before the end of this decade" speech at Rice Stadium.
Love those Fightin' Owls and their MOB....Marching Owl Band. I hope they will make UNT's Apogee Stadium one of their conference road appearances this Fall. HINT! HINT! Rice Alums! LOL!
