RE: Bowl News!
The Russell Athletic Bowl (Champs) could pick as low as 7th depending on what other bowls we get. Right now it looks to match ACC #5-#7 against AAC #2-#3. So the opponent most years will probably be South Florida, Central Florida, Houston, Cinnci, and East Carolina. I don't think UConn and the others will get picked for this spot very often.

The ACC very well may keep the Sun Bowl. I was just saying that one is not a lock at this point.

The Pinstripe Bowl regulars will be BC, Syracuse and Pitt for the ACC with Notre Dame thrown in probably at least once. I don't think many of the teams south of Virginia will ever play in it. The Big Ten will send Rutgers and Maryland if they are bowl elgible. But they will also send Penn State and some of the big boys a few years because they want to generate interest in New York City.

No doubt. The bowl games ACC teams NEED to shoot for in 2014 are the Rose & Sugar. Really, the Orange should be considered as a consolation prize if you are a top team (much less the Gator, Russell, Belk, Outback, etc.)

STILL, it's nice to have a soft landing spot for those years when you leap for the playoffs and don't quite make it... (just don't start thinking that a trip to the Sun Bowl is "good enough")

Agreed. Plus better mid tier bowls means more money for the teams in the conference as well.

I like that better... more like a "real" bowl game now.

RE: Bowl News!
Why do fans of southern teams keep knocking the Pinstripe Bowl? There are tons of Pitt, Syracuse, BC, and ND alumni in the NYC area who love having that bowl game. In fact, I'd rather Pitt play in the Pinstripe than the Gator if the opponent was the same. New York is a hundred times better destination that Charlotte or Jacksonville. A little cold weather and people freak out.

I don't think most of those fans of the Southern schools realize their team will likely never play in the Pinstripe Bowl. All they see is an expensive city to stay in, sitting outdoors in the cold in a baseball stadium.

It's a good pick up and should be a great bowl for our Northern teams just like the Belk Bowl is for the Carolina teams. Since the Pinstripe is so close that help Boston College in particular but also Pitt and Syracuse increase their reputation for traveling to bowls. Wake took over 25,000 and Duke took over 20,000 to the Belk Bowl for example. That helps the ACC in future years with bowl negotations because bowls are less afraid that they might get a team that won't bring any fans.

There's enough northern teams in the ACC now to keep that bowl filled. I doubt ND would ever fall that far for an invite.

I also wonder if we will lose all of our AAC tie-ins. Belk wants SEC and I believe the Big 12 is looking at the Russell

Agree that the Pinstripe absolutely makes sense for the ACC.

Bowl Games matchups with the SEC and B1G are important because they get a lot of attention and eyeballs, much more than against non-AQ schools. I like the way things look to be going.

It's one of the most important reasons for adding Notre Dame, so I'd be very disappointed if the ACC wasn't captializing on it. Especially because ND is going to grab one of them every year.

RE: Bowl News!
There will probably be language in the bowl contracts limiting the number of times each bowl can select the Irish. That makes more bowls interested in the ACC and willing to pony up more money. That should also make the Irish available for the Pinstripe at least once or twice. Otherwise I agree it will normally be BC, Syracuse and Pitt in that bowl.

According to a GT insider, the Russell Athletic bowl will stay with the AAC. Remember South Florida and Central Florida are members of that conference now.

Depends on what else available for russell imo.
They took old BE, but required ND 1 of 4.

I thought the Big 12 wanted a Fla bowl. There aren't too many options for them. I figured this would be the easiest to get....unless the SEC drops the Gator.

The Big XII does want a Florida Bowl. They very well could end up as the ACC opponent in the Gator.

The Russell Athletic Bowl info isn't my information, just passing that on from a GT Insider who I trust.

From what I've read, it doesn't sound like the SEC is ready to give up the Gator. If the AAC keeps the Russell then it has to drop in the pecking order unless it's their #1 team.

Well keep in mind that the ACC lost the Chick Fila Bowl to the playoffs. So they better get the Gator just to break even. If they don't get the Gator and some other better mid tier bowls, it will be another league failure.

In some ways the Pinstripe is a replacement for the Sun, except it's a convenient trip for some conference members. Having said that, I'd keep the Sun also if it was interested, as it will be difficult to increase the number of bowls in the $2 million+ range without keeping the Sun.

Fortunately, the ACC is in a strong position to regain the Gator. Ratings for the Gator have been way down since partnering with the B1G, possibly because the B1G has been able to offer only a very late pick, and they haven't any of their bowls. The ACC, on the other hand is able to offer their top non-CFP pick (as they did until 1996) except from a larger pool, plus Notre Dame in some years. It's really a perfect fit.

RE: Bowl News!
my ACC bowl priorities:
1) get the Gator
2) upgrade Belk
3) enter into a rotation w/ SEC & B1G for Outback
4) get Pinstripe
5) keep Russell, upgrade if possible
6) keep Music City
7) keep Sun
8) keep/upgrade Military
9) replace Independence w/something better

Pie in the sky:
a) create a new bowl w/B1G in Indianapolis (indoors)
b) create a new bowl w/SEC & Big XII in St Louis (indoors)
c) upgrade the Kraft Hunger bowl in San Francisco (move to 49ers stadium?)

Future-thinking:
*) create a bowl in Puerto Rico, w/ upgraded stadium - I don't care who we play as long as we are locked into it for 30 years - grow it slowly into a big deal - include a kickoff game there.

Puerto Rico would be cool but the largest stadium on the island only seats 22,000. I think you would have to build a completely new stadium.

If Cuba ever opens up, they have a 55,000 seat stadium.

Let's not forget that prior to this last year, ND had 15+ years of suck. It's entirely possible they fall to the Pinstripe bowl. With the $2 million payout, it'll be in the top 1/2 of our bowls.
