We have knocked at the door in the recent past in all sports really---WBB we were in a regional---MBB 2 regionals and great past with crowds of almost 9K----softball in the wcws a few times and always in the regionals (1 out from the WCWS this year) baseball in the CWS and a regional guest almost always ------and football where we have been bowl eligible the last 6 of 8 years and went to the NO bowl and sold more tickets than any other school in the country excluding the championship-----Now just think about the area of recruiting and the crowds if Big 12 schools would come regularly----season tickets through the roof in all sports and a very worthy Big12 member!!! Also easy driving and air access to Lafayette---Did I mention we were the #1 food city in the nation as by S Living mag???

I agree. Lafayette has great food.

Olde Tyme Grocery anyone?

Judice Inn burgers.

I visit Lafayette a couple times a year and have yet to visit Judice Inn.

I was there a couple weeks ago and hit up La Fonda, Olde Tyme and Zea. That was my first time at Zea and thought it was very good.

Judice Inn on Johnson. You cant go wrong with a Burger joint that refuses to serve you ketchup for your burger.

10 miles outside Lafayette in Henderson, next to Landry's is a hole in the wall, Chicken on the Bayou. Great Shrimp and Oyster Po Boys, spicy fried chicken. Never miss a chance to stop there.

I love the rebranding ... "Louisiana". That must piss off some people in Baton Rouge.

It's not rebranding. ULL stands for University of Louisiana at Lafayette. It is the same as any other State that does such. A major example of that is the State of Wisconsin and it's multitude of University of Wisconsin campuses.

The folks that might get irritated are the folks up in Monroe.

For years I knew them only as "Louisiana-Lafayette". Now I see them listed frequently as just "Louisiana".

I thought there was a rebranding. Maybe I wasn't paying attention.

This is what people are missing about the Sun Belt. Arkansas State will break ground in the spring on a $27 million indoor practice facility with new weight rooms, locker rooms, offices, sports medicine facility and luxury seating.

A decade ago Sun Belt teams where scrapping by. Low salaries and lousy facilities and leadership. The attitude was we are fielding a team, what else do you want.

When Gus Malzahn left for Auburn, he turned down a $1.4 million offer from Arkansas State. The top of the Sun Belt is competitive with the rest of the G5 in salaries and facilities.

It's a new day.

There has been a rebranding.

The school was created by the state government in the 1890s and had the words "Southwestern Louisiana" as a part of its name for 100 years. When I was at Tulane they were always -- Always -- referred to in the state media as "Southwestern" or "USL" (University of Southwestern Louisiana).

Then in 1999 the name was changed to "University of Louisiana - Lafayette". And now they are trying to be just "University of Louisiana", period. I don't live in Louisiana anymore, so I don't know how successful that effort has been., but that is what they want to do.

I remember when they were SW Louisiana. Cuse got a one year transfer in Hoops back in 1973-74 (Fred Saunders) from SW Louisiana after they were given the death penalty. Saunders was a VG player who actually had a sip of coffee in the NBA.

I was a member of the football team at USL while Freddie played basketball....great guy and tremendous defensive player who could knock down the 15 to 20 footer when you needed it....player about 7 years in the NBA for Phoenix and Boston....he would love that you remembered him

Both the Cajuns and the Red Wolves will soon have great facilities. Both schools can be proud of them. 07-coffee3

The rise and fall of Coach Shipley and his MBB program at Southwestern Louisiana is a very interesting story, and definitely deserves to be re-told to a new generation. All in all, Shipley was an admirable man and it's good to see his legacy continue.

I don't know what the exact point-of-view is for this film, but I hope it does not repeat the unfounded, untrue myth that USL was "singled out" by the NCAA for "minor infractions" because it had recruited African-American athletes earlier than other schools in Louisiana or the surrounding region. It would be a shame to spread that misinformation.

Any idea where he is now? He was my favorite player on that Orange team...probably because he came out of nowhere to help them. I was just a punk 9th grader when he played but I was hooked on Cuse Basketball already.

All I know about the point of view of the film is it's being produced and put together by a Lafayette native and Cajun fan. But I can tell you this, he has done major research and this isn't just a fly by the night film... he's been working on it for 2+ years. It will have all the facts of the story straight. But don't be surprised if it's a little biased towards "our" side of the story. I guess we'll just have to wait and see when it comes out.

I heard they are releasing it at a film festival and then on DVD... while also submitting it to ESPN for a 30 for 30 piece.

I visited with Freddie and Bo Lamar a few years ago as they were both back in Lafayette, LA. Both have returned to Columbus, Ohio which is their home town.....Those teams averaged around 90 points a game in an era with no 3 pt. shot....

RE: Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns incredible new facility
Roy Ebron and Dwight Lamar were terrific college players. But the Cajuns also revived quickly after the DP, led by Andrew Toney, who was a big-time recruit and an even bigger-time player. Their first 2 post-DP coaches were successful and well-liked; the third (Marty Fletcher) was successful, but not well-liked (rudely-so) and effectively run off, the fortunes began to fall.
The key to ULL will be to monetize its football success. A lot of the attendance revival is students going to games, which brings in concession money but not significant money. They have to get these ticket buyers to pony-up and to broaden the base. They have the student population for a student fee as well, which could be used to replace the large taxpayer supplement they use for athletics; that would also take their financing out of the hands of the state legislature.
The movie sounds like a great idea, as long as it is honest.

We are doing exactly what you are saying. Money is starting to poor into athletics. That is how we are doing the $115M athletic Master Plan. The video is only part of Phase I of the Master Plan. Wait until you see Phase II (hasn't been released yet).

Regarding basketball, I was in school during the Lamar and Ebron days and it was awesome. Lamar led the nation in scoring averaging over 36 pts. a game with no 3 point shot. Ebron was actually on the cover of Sports Illustrated who picked USL as a Final Four team along with UCLA. After the Death Penalty, I believe it was only the second year that we beat Patrick Ewing and Georgetown to win the Great Alaska Shootout. A couple years later, we were in the Final Four of the NIT, when it was a much bigger and more prestigious tournament, losing to Notre Dame. Basketball has been down for a number of years. However, Louisiana basketball is coming back under Coach Marlin and watch for Elfrid Payton who made a name for himself on the USA team this summer.
