ODU plans new 30,000 seat stadium
http://hamptonroads.com/2013/08/odu-envi...ll-stadium
Quote:The stadium would be designed so it could be expanded to 45,000 or more seats, sources said.
Details of funding for the new stadium haven’t been finalized and it isn’t known how much a new stadium would cost. Nonetheless, sources indicate ODU hopes to have the new stadium open by 2017.

Not smart.
Way to throw away 25 million dollars on some endzone facility for a few years use beside a pre world war 2 stadium that can't be expanded. That's what you call vision.

They couldn't have had any clue that C-USA would come begging so soon. I think they honestly planned to stay FCS for a while. The article says the endzone facility will not be demolished with the old stadium.

They plan to repurpose the endzone facility and leave the turf as a recreational pitch.
This isn't Charlotte or Georgia State, where they knew they were jumping on the first train to FBS. ODU didn't harbor immediate plans to move to FBS, so having an FBS-quality facility wasn't on the front burner. They just wanted something that would work in the CAA. Now, things have changed, and the stadium needs have changed with them.
Far smarter to build something that can be added to easily than spend more money than that to renovate a stadium that couldn't be significantly expanded.

Most people thought ODU would be the worst team in the CAA the first year in. This grew so fast

The endzone facility is going to be used still. We didn't anticipate an FBS jump so soon, so building the endzone facility wasn't a bad move to begin with. If we hadn't built the endzone facility we might not have had this much success. It could very well have been a necessary expense to position ourselves as we have.
As for the decision to build a new stadium, that is clearly "smart" and it screams "vision."
It seems ODU has made every correct decision for the football program given the information they had at the time of decision.

Vision is what Al Gore lack when he create the Internet not knowing you would make it a unpleasurable experience.

Hey, I noticed that ODU's current stadium's seating capacity kept going up and down over the years. It started at 17,500, went up to 26,000, and then back down again to its current 19,818. Anyone from ODU know the reason for that?

It has been due to different endzone seating through the years.

RE: ODU plans new 30,000 seat stadium
I would think ODU could fill 35,000 pretty easily. Building only 30,000 seems short-sighted in my opinion.

Do you know why they kept changing it so frequently though? You guys have had 6 different stadium capacities over the course of the stadium's history. Rice's stadium also once had a much larger seating capacity until they covered the end zone seats, but I don't think they kept going back and forth with it. I think they changed it once, and then stayed with it.

Could be more than 30k, that's just the recommended amount. They haven't got plans set in stone at this point.

Possibly, but might as well keep demand high for as long as possible.

It was flanked on both ends by aluminum bleachers at one point, but one endzone was removed.
