Don't hold your breath hoping that your ECU pirates will become the next Butler/ VCU. I am only saying this for your safety... actually better yet... Please do.

Nor do I expect that. I'm just using them to say that ancient history really doesn't matter. You really think because Houston went to final 4's and has history that they are a great program today? The people and situations that make stuff like that possible change. No more SWC.

Y'all might not expect it but I could buy it. I've always been the most pessimistic ECU Bball fan but people/friends (from other fanbases) insist that it's only a matter of time. I'm still extremely leery... but apparently we are in a talent rich/basketball crazy state where a couple of good players can turn it around. I know how it sounds....trust me, i'm a skeptic too.

Good work! Gotta be happy anytime the biggest farce in sports history loses! Even better when it's a conference mate doing the damage.

But does Houston even embrace that history? Houston let that disappear without trying to hold on to national prominence. It takes some upkeep to the standards they keep from their program. Sometimes you have to run off coaches that can only get you to NIT's for guys that can take you farther. In certain cases such as USM football sometimes that goes the wrong way. Does anyone think USM will ever go 1-23 ever again in 2 concurrent seasons?

I haven't heard Houston's coach or program mention the NCAAs or returning to that level. I don't think their program is really trying to return to that level which is sad considering their history.

Compare their program to Texas Western (UTEP). Which one is in better shape?

It's not Kansas or North Carolina, that's for sure. The guy played for Roy Williams at Kansas and got good ol' boyed into the 3rd assistant job at UNC because of that. Is it really that hard to "look" good in that position or know the challenges faced at a place like UAB. All I said was you guys took a huge gamble.

What challenges are you referring to at UAB? And how do you know Haase was "good ol' boyed" into the 3rd Assistant coach job at UNC? And I thought Haase had been an assistant for like 9 years. Do you even know what you are trying to say Jonesing?

Of course he doesn't know what he's talking about. His mouth is running, but his brain is stuck on stupid. He probably doesn't know Haase was the head coach of UNCs JV squad.

Either way from the time the NCAA tourny started in 1939 until 1997, ECU had more NCAA's in almost 30 years less as a D1, and that's all you guys seem to care about. I just use Butler as an example of a program that changed their fortunes in a big way.

Here's a history lesson that will blow your little pea skull, but the NCAA tourney was the minor tournament in many of those early years. I don't know how many Butler went to, but the NIT was a bigger deal.

Just Dwayne Wade and Marquette, including the team that was #8 at the time and went to the Final 4 in 2003. Who knows how good this UNC team really is yet.

Oh yeah, UAB beat that #8 Marquette team too! So who is the other team ECU beat? You said two top 10 wins.

OK, thanks. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Congrats again to the Blazers ... you're historically the top hoops program within the state of Alabama and hope that you get back to the NCAA tournament within the frequency of Coach Gene.

RE: FINAL - UAB 63 #16 UNC 59
Larranaga coached his first 2 yrs at a d2 school that had 5 straight losing seasons. He turned them into a winning team. He became the head coach in d1 a few yrs later and turned Bowling Green around and moved up to coach at George Mason and got them in NCAA his second season. Had numerous NCAA tournament wins and moved up again to Miami and has had great success there as well.
Comparing Lebo to Larranaga is like comparing semipro football to the NFL.
One is successful and one is not.
In college basketball success is measured in NCAA invites.
Some ECU fans understand this- some don't.

Wait. It's not measured in facility investment and crowd size?

See, this whole time I thought success was measured by the score board.

You are wrong. Haven't you seen the detailed explanation of how ECU had a better season than Charlotte, even though they had less top 100 wins, went to a lesser tournament, and lost to the team on the court? Who cares about a scoreboard when you have shiny facilities and more people in the stands?

That's just what the RPI formula, Pomory, and Sagarin said when all the games were graded out last year. You know those bias ECU fans. Take it up with the people that write those formulas that say we had the better season.

Quote:Who cares about a scoreboard when you have shiny facilities and more people in the stands?

I never said we were anything special, just that it's more of an indictment on your program that you draw like some historical loser like ECU and still look just about like us in anything foundational with facilities, fanbase, and resources. Worse in fact in some area's.

SJ, I don't know how many times we have to explain this. So, ECU had a better season than any team that made the NCAA tournament and lost early too? Better than any team that made the NIT and lost early?

I don't know how to get this through your thick skull. If you wanted to manipulate the RPI, you would play a bunch of teams ranked between 75 and 150 out of conference. That is how you would do it if you could actually pull it off, but we know nobody can determine those teams before the season starts. You are basically doing the same exact thing, except being guaranteed these games when you play in a tournament like the one ECU played in. Again, winning the tournament is a great feat, but playing with the numbers after the fact means nothing.

If you could have an NCAA appearance, or that title, which would you choose?

Lebo went to the NCAA's as a player at UNC and as an asst at East Tennessee St, Vandy and South Carolina. In fact he went to the big dance at every place he has been where he was not in charge.
Since he has been a head coach for now his 16th season he has never ever been to the big dance. I am not saying he is a bad basketball coach. Just unsuccessful.

To be fair, his last two HC stops have been historically weak hoops programs... oh, wait...

Yet we draw more fans, have a higher paid coaching job, have a practice facility etc. I wouldn't trade you for Haase. I would trade nothing about our program/future with you. Lebo took over teams with losing records or on probation at all 4 jobs he has had and turned them all around and owns the all time winningest season ever at 2 different schools. The guy climbed the coaching ladder early in his career and wasn't at a place long enough to take the step beyond that but has a lot more proven resume. What has Haase done other than go 21-19. Look at Jim Larranaga. 13 years in head coaching before he went to an NCAA, and 11 years at one place which is a lot worse. He's been to the final 4, coach of the year etc since. It doesn't matter.
