RE: (OT) Any of you Sling customers?
Sling TV customer. In fact one of the first maybe 1,000. I was a beta add and was emailed on day 3 or 4 of the rollout and had ESPN for the first time in 7 years.
If you can't justify cable just for sports (> $100 in NYC) and want your ESPN fix instead of sports bar trips for $20 + $5 sports package, then it's great.
Upside:
- Great Value (+$5 sports is ESPN U, ESPNNEWS, and a few others including BEiN for all sorts of soccer).
Downside:
- Has crashed on big events in the past. Haven't had this problem much recently, but it almost ruined March Madness for me last year. They have seemed to improve their end.
- Changing channels takes for ever. If you are a flipper, you're screwed.
- No DVR option.
- No regional or Big Ten sports networks. If you need YES, SNY, or your local sports south? You are SOL.
- No FS1 (ALCS), No NBCSN (NHL)
Basically? If you want 'cable' (read: ESPN!) for a crazy low price, this is the ticket. If you want a traditional cable experience, this isn't it.
I love it, with the Leaf Metro HD antenna and this I get my sports fix. It's perfect for me as a cord cutter / sports bar refugee...

Think of roku sort of like a smart tv or phone. Sling tv is an app for it that works more like cable tv than hulu or netflix.

My internet costs about 50 a month, and the cable an additional 70... My kids watch the Disney channel and I watch sports channels. Everything my wife watches is on OTA networks like ABC. So if I can get sling with the sports channels, it sounds like I can drop that 70 to around 27... And only miss out on the CBSSN and FSN stuff.
Yeah so sling would make a lot more sense for you. Youd save roughly $50 per month.

Yes. Technically speaking you are paying DISH since they own and operate Sling.

To the people that have Sling... do any of you also have a data cap on your internet? Comcast here in Memphis has a 300GB per month limit. Just wondering if you go over that by streaming your Sling programs.

No data cap that I am aware of. ISP is Cincy Bell. There might be a limit on how many wireless devices I can use at one time. Have 2 computes, 2 phones, and sling/roku all on wireless no issues.
