"There is no *immediate* value to be added?" Who knows even w/ the "immediate." BXII contract says no reduction in TV shares per member with two new additions. Also, can't speak for all schools but *some* might bring additional money in NCAA basketball credits. New recruiting areas. New TV markets. On the future --- new money added with a conference championship game. And *if* there's a future BXII Network than add that for the new TV areas covered.

I won't for a second deny potential upsides to some of these programs. But, the issue is the next few years.

Bringing a major programs brings major upsides immediately. You have to want to invest in the growth option and I don't think the Big12 is needing to invest that way right now.

This is the biggest point. The worst thing the Big 12 could do, from the point of view of most of its members, is anything that makes UT less happy and more likely to leave. It would be a death wish to expand if they oppose it. Which means we should take the possibility of Big 12 expansion seriously only if UT's president and/or AD say that UT wants it.

Do we know how the new regime in Texas feels now? The old regime's view was clear, but the new regime is kind of a wild card right now. They have to face hard questions like do they want the big 12 to survive long term, or are they willing to milk it and then move to a conference where things would be very different?

It's interesting. Time tells all tales.

Why do you think they'd lose money?

There is no immediate value to be added.

There is also the problem of the mismatch. How excited is a Texas fan base going to be to play UCF or BYU when they feel they need to be playing other major programs?

Alright, I may be old; but isn't BYU almost considered a "Big Time Program" because of their "poll implied" National Championship? I know there might be some hesitation because of the strong church affiliation; but media wise, aren't they in the top of schools in the discussion? Or am I missing something here....

RE: Big 12 Info from Pete Thamel
I hope this happens. CFB's new playoff system fixed SO much of what was broken with the post-season, and having five leagues with parallel structures (two divisions, CCGs on final weekend, minimum of 9 P5 opponents) is another step in the right direction. Sure, Notre Dame might still be "outside" the clean/parallel structure...but they like it that way and are happy to risk it.

BYU is an attractive TV partner for the Big 12...Cincy gets them in Ohio and makes sense with WVU being such an extreme outlier. I think that expansion would sit still for the next decade if the Big 12 would just make this simple, stabilizing move.

RE: Big 12 Info from Pete Thamel
I am beginning to think that Thamel and some others news writers are becoming more of trolls trying so hard to get their favorite teams into a certain conference like trying to get UConn. and BYU as a pair into the Big 12. As it is, the Big 12 officials said no about westward expansion and said no about UConn. since they are too far out. Lets scratch these teams off the list:
UConn.
BYU
San Diego State
New Mexico
UNR
UNLV
Boise State
Colorado State
SMU
RICe
Tulane
Temple

The schools that are on top of the list are:
Cincinnati
UCF
USF
Memphis
East Carolina
Houston
Air Force

RE: Big 12 Info from Pete Thamel
Refer to my other thread that was locked due to the fact I was revealing too much info about Big12 expansion plans. This is being used as the smokescreen to justify expansion; however, they are being forced to expand because of the lawsuit.

You're welcome

Big 12 Info from Pete Thamel
DavidSt has now said in at least 3 posts that it won't be Rice.
Sorry, Miko, but that could be the real smokescreen.

BYU and Rice will (not) be added to make 12. The reasoning against both is overwhelming.

If the Big 12 takes Houston, Rice should really join the AAC.

TCU looks like a more valuable addition a few years in than WVU.

As a wvu fan....adding uconn and Cincinnati would be nice. Not sure how those additions would play with the old big 12south/SWC schools though.

I have been saying that Cincy/Memphis makes the most sense for the Big 12. They already have the Houston market. UCF/USF don't help with WVU island problem. Tulane is a dumpster fire of a program.

I think Cincy/Memphis makes sense too...

I wish Thamel had expanded more on this:

"The Power Five votes count for twice as much as the Group of Five's, but the smaller leagues could ultimately decide whether the legislation and amendment are passed."

I really haven't seen too much on the G5 conferences' perspectives about CCG deregulation, other than conjecture on this board.

BYU is fine. The problems are nobody else available match them and the Big 12 doesn't want to go west.

I think the way I would describe feeling of the BYU fans that I know is that if invited to the Big 12, they would be thrilled at the inclusion. But with all the talk over the past 5 years they aren't holding their breath.
