RE: "One" Univ of Alaska?
If I'm not mistaken, Pitt and Rutgers have satellite campuses. No idea how they divide up the sports though.

Ohio State has satellite campuses that have athletic teams that compete in a separate organization / conference called something like OSUIA. The NCAA and NAIA need accreditation for each campus, and Ohio State can not provide that.
Think some of the Rutgers and Pitt campuses have their own separate accreditations.

Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden are entirely separate institutions, the same way UNC-charlotte and UNC-Wilmington are separate from UNC-Chapel-Hill.

RE: "One" Univ of Alaska?
Just speaking from personal knowledge, but the Miami system would be a decent model to draw upon. You have the primary university in Oxford, but you also have branches in Hamilton and Middletown that are mostly two-year schools with a process for transferring students to the superior main campus if they make the grades. As of late they've been granting those regional campuses some more autonomy to offer some four-year programs not covered in Oxford. Sports-wise, they have their own programs that compete in a conference with other Ohio university branches, probably somewhere near Division II NAIA if I had to guess.

This is the major cost driver for higher education in the US ... the rampant inflation of admin salaries combined with proliferation of "necessary" things for the admin to do (many of which at one time would have been done on 20% "university service" load by committees of long time academic staff). At pretty much any major University in the US, the major source of serious cost savings are the administration overhead that has accumulated over the past three decades.

Same thing for Houston and all of its satellite campuses. These campuses, especially UHD, have diluted UH's reputation for years.

RE: Univ of Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks to merge?
As I've said in another thread, there is no reason for Fairbanks to have any significant human presence year round. There just isn't.
Or for that matter to have the state capitol on an inaccessible (except by airplane or cruise ship) island.
I'm sure some clever (or dumb lucky) state politician caused the university to be established in Fairbanks. What is done is done. And almost impossible to be undone. Even if it makes no sense.
But if UA was going to merge into a single accredited system, then all four-year and graduate degree programs should be based from Anchorage. All sports should be in Anchorage. Fairbanks and Juneau should have two-year degrees than can transfer to Anchorage.

RE: Univ of Alaska-Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks to merge?
To be fair, Alaska is pretty isolated anyways, so it really doesn't matter much where the state university or state capitol is. It could be in the Aleutian Islands, Kodak or Barrow and it wouldn't change much.
I do agree that if they were to move either, Anchorage would make the most sense, as it is that part of the world's only legit metropolis.

Just as Fargo should be the home of all ND colleges and universities, says every NDSU fan ever.

You sound like someone who has never gotten out of the Midwest. UAF is in a beautiful location and has a true college campus feel with better community support. It is also one of a very small group of schools that is listed as a land, sea, and space grant universitiy. UAA is a community college that grew into a 4 year university. It is spread out and has no collegiate feel to it. The only thing that it has going for it is location. Now, I am not saying that all programs should be based out of Fairbanks or that UAA is inferior academically. I have no idea, but UAF is an integral part of Fairbanks.l, UAA is an afterthought.

I gotta agree with him, regardless of anything UA has going for it, that seems like a harsh location to live in except the summer time. Might as well place a school in Iceland, Greenland or Yukon. I know some of you live at far northern latitudes and for all of your life in some cases but even that is not as harsh by your standards I'm sure.

NoDak, if there was a proposal to merge NDSU and UND into one school, then everything except hockey, for obvious reasons, should be on Fargo.
Outside of that context, you don't have a point.

I'd venture that the overwhelming majority of incoming UAF students know what they're getting themselves into in terms of weather. It's not like putting Cal in Truckee.

True but that doesn't make it any more ideal. As I said, Anchorage is the closest thing to a legit metro for hundreds of miles in any direction.

Pittsburgh-Johnstown is NCAA D2, and I remember reading a news article a few years back that they might add football in the future.

Alaska-Fairbanks used to have football. I could see why they drop it.

It was a major varsity team which is now defunct. You play football or baseball in all the weird places. They knew how to do it, but the weather beat them. Alaska is much warmer now which could be good idea for football weather. No need for lights to play at night either because of the land of the midnight sun.

Here is an article about the Ice Bowl. Plus, there is a film on Youtube of one of the games linked to the paper. It was not like the lower 48, but the school seemed to be proud of the football team.

If Fairbanks wants to readd football? They could play in Carlson Center. They play hockey there, plus there was a pro-indoor football team that played there as well. Just needs to add more seatings to be FCS ready.
