Yes. ODU would do well to also give banners or house flags free to any bar or restaurant that wants one. Thats like a free billboard for the school. Its well worth a $25 banner for that kind of exposure. Ive thought about buying them in bulk in and asking places that have other schools up if they will add ODU. If they say yes, just pull one out of my trunk and give it to them. It comes across as authentic pride and positions the school as a place the area embraces and its alumni support. You could get hundreds of banners for the cost of a billboard for one month.
They should also be giving all incoming freshman free nice looking T-shirts that they will actually wear. Send one to every incoming student before they arrive and ask them to put it on social media with a specific hashtag. That word of mouth promotion and genuine excitement about ODU is priceless.
They do give out shirts for incoming freshman, or at least they did when I went to orientation. It was a really nice shirt, navy blue with the ODU full logo with the lion on the front and on the back it had the number 13 (for 2013, the year I was supposed to graduate) and "ADMITTED" like a last name on a jersey. I lost it but I really liked it an wore it a lot. While I was on campus is saw shirts for 2012, 2014, and maybe 2015. I'm not sure if they do it anymore
Admissions still gives a shirt to all incoming freshmen on Admitted Student Day. They also give a shirt to both parents at Orientation.

I think the problem is, if the school gives them away then they can't charge people to buy those flags/banners etc.
I think 1 big hand out would get the pride thing going, and maybe cause some neighbor envy (might inspire them to buy one?). When those banners / flags fade or get damaged, people might be more prone to buy one as a replacement.
Its not like BWW, Green Turtle, AJ Gators, Chichos, etc are buying ODU gear anyway. Only give them to businesses. There are pizza places on the OBX that hang college banners from the rafters, including VT, UVA, ECU etc. We're the closest D1 school to there. Seems if we give them one and they hang it, all those tourists see it and associate us with the beach, a good time, and all those other schools too. Heck, I wouldn't even be opposed to hiring some students, paying them minimum wage and giving them T-shirts to walk up and down the VB resort strip in the summer and just have a good time. Again, cheap yet authentic promotion.
I was visiting family in High Point last weekend and there's a ton of businesses that have purple "I (heart) High Point University" banners and signs. Not sure if it's part of a program or if they give them out, but it was hard to miss them -- and I never actually saw the campus, so it wasn't just in the immediate area.
The HPU President came from a Business Background and understands leveraging relationships and marketing to improve the institution. 20 years ago HPU only accepted crappy kids and had a crappy campus. Now they can't keep the kids away and have an amazing campus. Their president reinvented the place and ran it like a business to make it a better college.
When my daughters were looking at schools, we found that High Point had an ice cream truck that went around campus giving free ice cream to students.

Free Tshirt ideas may help. Everyone seems to go crazy over a free tshirt at football games. I was waiting for the dude behind me to dump his hot cocoa on me while he was trying to catch one.

Hey, I'll take a sponsor logo over no sponsor at all!
When I was cheering we would throw shirts into the crowd, some games they would give us too many (field goal shirts, sack shirts, 4th quarter stops shirts, promotional shirts, etc) and I grabbed a couple and one of my favorites has a "GETEM PEST SERVICES" logo in the back, bigger than the ODU logo on the front lol. I still wear it because it's a nice Old Dominion Football shirt regadless

Looking for a Xmas gift for that special someone? Dicks is having a sale on hoodies and quarter zips. There is a selection of several ODU hoodies on their website for $25.

Be carful of the quality. I bought one from Dick's "Collosium" brand. It looked great but "pilled" awful. I'll never buy that brand again.

You know what you saved me 30 bucks. I was going to buy that quarter zipper. Going to buy that underarmour stuff though.

They have a VCU sign, but no ODU. Go figure.

Shocker there! There are so many image and branding opportunities that ODU misses out on.
Before you bash too hard, there also is no UVA on there, and VT is shown as Virginia Tech University, which I have never heard them called.

So your take is that because someone else is doing less makes it OK that ODU is doing less. Go it

Not my point. My point is that selection of schools on here seems very random and excludes arguably the most well know school in our state, so it doesn't bother me that ODU isn't on that particular list for a lame sign that may sell 5 units...
Go it?

I was on google maps today and noticed we didn't have a huge logo on the roof of any of our athletic facilities that can be seen from the air. I know, small detail... But we are talking branding. Looks like the TED would be perfect

RE: ODU Brand/Image Improvement Thread
I was at Kings Dominion this weekend and they have VCU basketballs as prizes in the 3 pointer games. Thats something I've been saying ODU needs to do for years. Its the perfect demographic and places your brand right beside the UNCs and Dukes of the world. Especially so at Busch Gardens, but really at both parks. I was also in downtown Baltimore and saw 3 giant beautiful billboards promoting Towson football and one on 95 for Ram hoops that is always there year round. ODU claims they have no money for this type of marketing, yet somehow peer basketball schools and even FCS football teams seem to be able to do things ODU can't. What do these schools have figured out that ODU doesn't? Similar schools, similar demographics, so I assume similar budgets, yet we consistently get less bang for our buck. It's as if we're so low budget we need to have a fundraiser just for branding. I've honestly thought about it.

George Mason has "MASON" on top of EagleBank Arena, which I always thought was pretty cool. The roof of the Ted does look like a perfect canvas for a big "ODU" to go on top
