Yup. Americans are just irresponsible and we all don't know how to prioritize our spending.

Are you saying America does not have a problem with people not knowing how to budget and prioritize their spending?

FFS, I see new cars on sale for 77K. And these are not luxury cars they are pickups. The fact there is a market for a 77K dollar item which rapidly depreciates shows that we have issues.

um link? source...

Ford....

Specifically though http://www.caranddriver.com/

Ford Super Duty Pickup F-450 Platinum — $71,320. -> That's before taxes, title, and registration...

My wife and I were shocked at this when shopping for our latest car. We knew we would end up getting used but I had no idea that I'll never own a new car again.

But people will shell out money for this. Because we as a society are so rich that we've forgotten how to budget and plan for the future..

Along the lines of this... My wifes old phone melted on her so we took our even older phone (which had been retired) to sprint to have them move the number over.

I saw college kids there gladly signing up for 70$ plans and throwing another 15-20$ (a month) on it so they can get the best iphone. Here I am, making damn near six figures, trying to get my 2010 samsung set up so my wife has a smartphone.

I thought you were talking something along the lines of an F-150 raptor. those pickup trucks designed to basically be sports cars with no legitimate reason to be used.

super duty pickup trucks are pretty much industrial level machines for people with a tight wallet. I tried googling sales but I didn't find anything specific to that model.

I can't remember the last time I saw one out on the road.

trying to pass that off as an everyday car is simply delusional.

Obviously you have never priced a three quarter ton or larger pickup truck.

I honestly thought he was smart enough to not include superduty machines that have practical uses. I thought he was going to bring up something that actually proves his point such as those tricked out F-150s designed to go fast.

77 vs 61 is a massive difference.

anytime someone has to use the phrase "suck it" in an argument is actually code for "I don't have enough to win argument so I hope this is enough for you to quit"

Three quarter ton and larger pickups have been popular "daily drivers" for non-commercial users for quite some time and sales continue to be high, especially diesels.

Chaffetz is right that Americans don't budget for important things. Hell, that's why SS was invented because people didn't save for retirement. Now, people expect the government to save for their retirement, then complain when they can't live off of SS.

I also agree most Americans are just dumb. They can't seem to put their needs before their wants sometimes. Most wants can wait.

He is accurate as it pertains to many, many people. They will have a new iPhone, new gaming system, a Netflix account, a 55" TV, get their nails done every week, get $500 tattoos and then complain about all the stuff they need.

It's a 20% difference but we are in a forrest / trees situation here.

61K + Taxes = 71K

I ended up buying a 2013 car with 77K miles on it for 16K. Far more than I'd want to spend on a 4 yo car. But my hand was forced because I need a car that can seat six.

The point was... We have a problem with budgeting in this country, we have a problem throwing away money on things we don't need.

It's why kids get six figures in debt on a meh education from some small private school when they are likely smart enough to get into a state school.

It's why 60% of Americans Don't Have a Personal Finance Budget! That's insane John... Freaking 60% (http://www.badcredit.org/6oadha/)

If you don't have a budget you can't complain about things you can/cant afford.

I see three one ton pickups before I turn off my street each day. Two F350's and a GMC 3500. None are work trucks.

Of course I don't live in Cuckville, USA so.......

Heck 90 percent of Americans had access to paid television! (https://www.reference.com/world-view/man...4a00e80b10)

Take an iphone high data plan bill, a netflix bill, and a cable bill... Put them together and you're talking anywhere from 100$ a month to 200$ a month.

it's a massive fundamental difference. 61K is not far off from popular high end trucks/cars that people buy and essentially the high end.

to add 20K to the high end price of something and call that a minor difference is dishonest dude. 77K is outside of anything that can be classified as mainstream america.

77K is basically a corvette Z06. 61K is a nice BMW. pretty huge difference in the frequency you see those two cars on the road.

Obviously you have never priced a three quarter ton or larger pickup truck.

I honestly thought he was smart enough to not include superduty machines that have practical uses. I thought he was going to bring up something that actually proves his point such as those tricked out F-150s designed to go fast.

Three quarter ton and larger pickups have been popular "daily drivers" for non-commercial users for quite some time and sales continue to be high, especially diesels.

I see an F-450 maybe once a year. give me a break.
I doubt that you'll run in to very many at home in the Castro District.

I see three one ton pickups before I turn off my street each day. Two F350's and a GMC 3500. None are work trucks.

Of course I don't live in Cuckville, USA so.......

again. give me a break dude.

Give yourself a break. Once again you are trying to pass yourself off as an expert on a subject you have absolutely no clue about.

The F450 was just one example. You can go on the Ford, Chevy, GMC, or Ram website and price any three quarter ton or one ton pickup to the level BIB mentioned with common options. Add in the specialty options like lift kits, fancy rims and tires, brush guards, etc. that many dealerships are adding on to these very popular trucks and you are pushing $90k or more. When my oldest son was home over Christmas we stopped off at the local Chevy dealer to look at a truck they had on the lot. It was a new 2500 with dealer installed lift kit, big aggressive off-road tires, winch bumper, LED light kit and a custom stereo. $93K before taxes and it's not a truck you buy to go build decks or haul skid steer tractors.

I don't know much about trucks but I do know that what an F-450 looks like. they are quite rare despite Ford being the king of pickups.

find me a 90K pickup truck that isn't used for industrial purposes. not hearsay nonsense

Don't even try to polish this turd. Probably no one spends less than an iphone worth on health care every year unless you're just uninsured

What the GOP is doing with health care is not smart governance or smart politics.

Obamacare was a s***y solution to a very serious problem, and nixing it while ignoring that problem (i.e. needless high costs, fraud, waste) is going to have a high cost.
