Yup. Americans are just irresponsible and we all don't know how to prioritize our spending.

Maybe we should make him pay for his own healthcare instead of the one provided to senators by taxpayers.

It's absolutely nuts what they are going. The message that they are sending. This is just a tax break. It's all it is. Tie that into health care????? They actually drew this up on a bar napkin?

When someone buys a new iphone every year and pays what would have feed them for several months and then get food stamps, yeah, it's a ******* problem.

If you can afford a top of the line phone, fine. If you can't, you get a cheap one. You don't buy a $900 one and cry you can't pay for a physical.

…and yet another sob story for the entitled. They don't understand money so they want the government to do the thinking for them. Sheesh, I have to get the operator to make a call. (overexaggerating here) but you get my drift.

How much do you pay for Health Insurance. I'd be ecstatic if mine cost as much as an iPhone.

This reminds me of that time when Bill O'Reilly went on a rant about how poor people can afford refrigerators and microwave ovens, therefore they must be gaming the system

If the health insurance industry wasn't such a complete farce in the first place we wouldn't have need the ACA.

I think the point is that a lot of people blow their money on "wants" and don't budget for "needs". That's how I take it anyway. Common sense.

I was just trying to see how far we could follow this If-Train to push the blame further down the tracks.

Black women spend more money on their hair than they do for health insurance. Chaffetz has a point about being budget oriented.

First off, you're not poor or low income. That's who the statement was directed at.

iPhone 7 = $650
cheap plan = $50 / month
Over ~$60 / month after tax.

A low-income person can get basic coverage for that. It's not great but it's something for low income folks.

You disagreeing with a statement doesn't make it non-factual. Obama didn't pass ACA for fun, or out of spite.

Exactly.

I remember one night we responded to a call at one of the government subsidized apartment complexes. As things were wrapping up one of the deputies made the comment that the only vehicles in the parking lot older than five years old belonged to either fire, ems, or the Sheriff's Dept. Or the medical calls, usually non-emergent BS, that we would run where the patient or family hands you the Medicaid card as soon as you walk through the door yet right there in the room with the patient is a top of the line TV, stereo, gaming system, laptop, etc.

You spend 20+ years seeing examples like that just about every workday and you'll know what Jason Chaffetz said was just stating the facts in the vast majority of the cases.

Yup. Americans are just irresponsible and we all don't know how to prioritize our spending.

Are you saying America does not have a problem with people not knowing how to budget and prioritize their spending?

FFS, I see new cars on sale for 77K. And these are not luxury cars they are pickups. The fact there is a market for a 77K dollar item which rapidly depreciates shows that we have issues.

Ford....

Specifically though http://www.caranddriver.com/

Ford Super Duty Pickup F-450 Platinum — $71,320. -> That's before taxes, title, and registration...

My wife and I were shocked at this when shopping for our latest car. We knew we would end up getting used but I had no idea that I'll never own a new car again.

But people will shell out money for this. Because we as a society are so rich that we've forgotten how to budget and plan for the future..

Along the lines of this... My wifes old phone melted on her so we took our even older phone (which had been retired) to sprint to have them move the number over.

I saw college kids there gladly signing up for 70$ plans and throwing another 15-20$ (a month) on it so they can get the best iphone. Here I am, making damn near six figures, trying to get my 2010 samsung set up so my wife has a smartphone.

Obviously you have never priced a three quarter ton or larger pickup truck.
