Alonzo Gaffney c/o 2019
Legacy recruit (his dad Kevin played at UC in the 80s) from Cleveland that blew up in Vegas in July. Talk is that he is a top 10-15 player in his class with tremendous long term potential. Already has offers from OSU, Lousiville, Kansas, etc.
Pretty sure he comes down to UC each year for homecoming with his family, so he has been around the program more than any other at this point.
This has to be a must get recruit for Mick, right?

I've been reading about the kid, and didn't make the name connection. He'd be a great get.

Unless a player such as this just flat out didn't fit Mick's system, seems to me you pull out all the stops to get a legacy guy in the program. A top 10 - 15 player, once signed, might be the breakthrough needed to get UC back in the door with other blue chippers. And if that happens, a top 10 to 20 class really puts the program back in the spotlight for still more high profile kids.

IMO, the final piece is making a deep run in March. Conference championships are good too, but I imagine that blue chippers won't care much about the AAC championship relative to making sweet sixteens and final fours.

idk. This might be similar to Kenyon's Kid. "Not wanting to live behind his dad's shadow" or something like that.

Forgive me for my ignorance of 1980's UC basketball, but was his father a star player?
Kenyon is a legend around Cincinnati. He left a huge legacy with UC basketball. He can easily be considered on of the top 5-10 players to ever play at UC. Kenyon's time at UC is only 17 years in the past, with his professional career keeping him relevant on the basketball scene up until only what, 3-4 years ago. Now he is a high profile player in the Big3, which is being pushed hard on TV. So he still has a profile in the game.
His son would certainly still feel his presence.
Was Gaffney a star player or more of a role player? I can't see a role player leaving a huge legacy that would put pressure on their son to live up to.

He certainly wasn't a National Player of the Year who has his jersey hanging above the south hoop every game and he played in the "dark ages" of UC basketball. I doubt that the normal UC basketball fans of today would even know his father played if someone asked them his name...so I don't think it's that big of an issue.

Never a star player; he played here 4 years and was a regular in the rotation his last two averaging around 10 pts a game his senior year. His daughter played a year at NKU a while back but then transferred.

Dad was a solid all around player as I recall, especially as a junior and senior. Sounds like Alonzo has spent a pretty fair amount of time around the program to the point where "(Cincinnati) is a place that has always felt like home." Hopefully we can leverage that now that he is blowing up.
Gaffney talks offer explosion
Forward Alonzo Gaffney had a huge July, and now he is racking up offers as fast as any prospect in the 2019 class.

So I just looked at his profile on 247 and UC wasn't even listed. Many of the blue bloods are, along with that basketball coaches graveyard...Penn State. Anyone know if this is an oversight on the part of 247 or if UC really isn't in on getting Gaffney?

I don't think anyone in here said that there was interest in UC, come to mention it, this does seem like an odd discussion given the overall context.

If there is no interest on UC's end then we are talking TT level incompetence from Mick.

True. In the one article Bearhawkeye posted, Alonzo is quoted suggesting he had familiarity and has followed Cincinnati since his father played here. If he's a legacy and maybe as good as a top two player in Ohio I'd like to think our coaching staff would make him priority one unless Alonzo privately told them, "no, never".
If that's the case, it raises other concerns.

I cannot believe that this is the case. Mick has always "tried to win" unlike tt who just put in time. I will be severely disappointed if Mick has lost his mojo.

Mick's on record several times saying that he only recruits kids that he knows he has a great shot at. In other words, he doesn't like taking on the big boys in recruiting.

There is interest & the staff has been at most if not all of his games this summer. That said, he's blowing up & will be able to go about anywhere he wants.

To clarify, my comment about "interest" was in regard to the player, not the coach.

I agree that Mick definitely tries to win during games, but not during recruiting. As Beercat said, Mick admits that he doesn't recruit players that he thinks he has no chance of getting. IMO, that's not a winner's mentality.
Even if Mick is right and he has no chance of getting most 4 (or any 5) star players, then he needs to ask himself "why?" and then do what is necessary to rectify the issue.
I really hope the new arena helps. We can't change our conference, but virtually everything else is within our control. I like Mick and I want him to be the coach to bring us back to being a national power, but his recruiting has to improve. Gregg Marshall has proven that he can create a perennial top 5/10 program on the backs of 3 star players, and Mick has proven that he can't. Therefore, if we want to get to that level again, recruiting has to improve.
