1) With the coaching turnover over the last several years, with I think three coaches fired or pretty much forced to resign by external pressure, how attractive is this job really? What would you say to a coach that asks what kind of commitment he is going to expect from the fans and the school?
2) How do you feel the contract lawsuit will be viewed by potential candidates?
3) Will GS be able to demonstrate financial strength to a potential coach and not play 2-3 money games per year? I think one of the flaws with GS right now is the home game schedule... Got to have 6 home games.
4) Does GS expect to return to the TO? With a P5 in-state school (GT) running a similar offense, along with service academies (run by former GS coaches) does that present recruiting problems for GS? Looking in from the outside, I'd have to think it does. It also looks like CCU might be employing a version of this as well... So more regional competition for a certain type of ball player.
1) BVG Quit, Hatcher fired after 3 seasons, Monken left for a big pay raise and dream job, Fritz left for a bigger contract, and TS was fired. Ask Ark State how their HC turnover has turned out for them. Coaching turnover is a non issue at a G5. You either keep a mediocre coach for 5 years, or you have good coaches get hired away every 2-4 years.
2) I doubt it affects it much at all.
3) Our athletic department showed a 1.6M dollar profit or so last year. financially, we are in a much better spot than we were 2 to 3 years ago. We could get up near the $900k/yr mark if we needed to for the right coach.
4) Not sure if we will go with a coach that will run the option out of the Flex Formation (GT, Army, etc), but I would like to see us stick with some sort of option offense. With the recruiting area we are in, getting a couple really good backs a year would be way easier than getting more of a pro style QB. I think that running the option at the G5 level is an advantage for longer term stability. Take a Kevin Ellison, or Jerrick McKinnon. Both 3 star guys that wanted to play QB. Got a lot of offers, but they got recruited as a WR or ATH. The fact that they could be a QB at southern got them here. And let's face it, if those 2 guys were taller, bigger, and could throw better and still keep their athletic ability, they would be 4 or 5 star dual threat QB's, and we would have never had a shot.
We will compete against GT for some recruits, but there are plenty of players to go around between us and them. As for Army and Navy, we rarely go against them for recruits, and honestly, if we are, and they choose Navy or Army, then more power to them, especially considering the commitment that comes with it.
