A large part of interpreting history is how you define it. 6-1 makes me feel good, especially since it is current. You find solace from 19-64 in thinking back into past glories, although I believe 22-64 is more accurate.

To be honest, I don't care about W&M. Good or bad. I hate VCU. I hate JMU. There are no extra feeling winning or losing vs. the Tribe. What I care more about is trying to get back to the tourney.

I didn't say back, your guy did. I just said we'd love to join you in the tourney. Reading comprehension is a wonderful thing and some think an important life skill.

Dayton plays Richmond tonight. VCU and Bowling Green also play.

W&M has enough firepower and Nathan Knight inside for this to be a truly special season for the Tribe. They are one of the best-shooting teams in the country, with more than one gunner. I said that right before we played them and those of you who can't get past 1975 poo-pooed it. And yes, we make more than 2 of 14 FTs, we win. But we didn't.

Yeah, 0-9 in conference finals is awful. Especially the one to the eventual national champion. 6-1 vs. the Norfolk Division is sweet however...

Can you transalte for us slow people?

Naw, I screwed up. I was thinking of the loss to WVU in the Southern conference tourney finals when Jerry West was @ WVU. WVU did not win the championship.

I assume this is what you meant, not your schools name from 1930-62.

W&M is 0-9 in conference finals all time.

Don't forget your awful NIT history. Only three births ever and zero wins. Impressive.

It's berths, not births, unless you're talking about when W&M birthed the panty spot that's morphed into the commuter school in Norfolk.

At least with all of our failures we've never had to buy our way out of a game with you to enhance our record, but enough about football.

2017-2018 Basketball Games of Interest
Serious questions: ODU has a rich history of very successful basketball, both ladies and men. Do you think your emphasis on football and subsequent move to a poor basketball conference has been a detriment to your basketball program? You owned W&M in basketball, started your football program, and now you can't beat us. Would you still support a move to CUSA knowing it would damage Monarch basketball? And, as a fan of ODU football, how do you feel about your ridiculous travel schedule?

Our option was big boy football and poor basketball conference or JV football and poor basketball conference. The choice seems pretty logical, no?

Not really. CAA is 4-5 conferences ahead of C-USA in basketball, and would be farther ahead than that if ODU had remained.

The cost of travel in money and wear and tear on athletes in C-USA for all sports has to be onerous. You also pass up a good fb play-off system for one of this potential line-up:

Bowl Date Time Matchup Network
R+L Carriers New Orleans Sat., Dec. 16 12 pm CT C-USA vs. Sun Belt ESPN
Gildan New Mexico Sat., Dec. 16 3:30 pm CT C-USA vs. Mountain West ESPN
Boca Raton Tue., Dec. 19 6 pm CT C-USA vs. American ESPN
St. Petersburg Thu., Dec. 21 7 pm CT C-USA vs. American ESPN
Bahamas Fri., Dec. 22 11:30 am CT C-USA vs. MAC ESPN
Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Tue., Dec. 26 TBA C-USA vs. Big 12 ESPN
*Independence Wed., Dec. 27 12:30 p.m. CT C-USA vs. ACC or SEC ESPN

*secondary agreement if ACC or SEC cannot fill
That has big-boy written all over it...

KenPom has 4 CUSA teams ranked ahead of the highest ranked CAA team. And then there are all the wins CUSA has had in the NCAAT and NIT. The only thing that says you're better is a flawed metric the NCAA is de-emphasizing. But congrats on getting games against Elon and Stony Brook. I'm sure that really excites the fanbase.

CAA is one bid and roughly equivalent except for the additional number of teams in the conference. The bowl game was huge and a very nice benefit. Much better than a playoff that no one attends or cares about.

You guys should be happy we left. Better chance at winning CAA (sorry that hansnt worked out) and one less guaranteed loss in football.

I'll add that I got to know Tribal and TribeS4F during our CAA days. I loved CAA football, the friends that were made, and the easily driveable road trips. While games against FBS powerhouses are fun (especially at home), I cannot recall the atmosphere at Foreman Field any better than during the CAA rivalry games and playoffs. Was the move up worth it? At this point, I am not so sure. I found a way to get to Ga. Southern for playoffs, but not the Bahamas Bowl on Christmas Eve. 'Nuff said.

As for the basketball, ODU has clearly taken a step back. Women's BB has been on the decline for years, so I won't comment on that, However, the lack of NCAA berths for the men since joining CUSA speaks for itself. I used to a vocal complainer about the "VCU Invitational" at the Big Brown Dump, but it was in my hometown and I never missed it. Since that time, conference tourneys have been in El Paso and Birmingham. Our fanbase travels well regionally, but not this far, and the lack of driveable conference tourney games has probably hurt our chances at making the NCAAs. I do think we are on an upswing, and hope that trend will be ended soon, BTW. As for the WM game itself, was there with the family, and that game was played at an incredibly high level, particularly in the second half. No complaints (other than not changing up defenses) on losing when the opponent is simply on fire from three. It was probably the highest level ODU-WM game I have witnessed, start to finish, and good rivalries required games like that, even the ones in which we fall short.

I guess I am at the point that given a chance to reset, I'd prefer we followed VCU to he A-10 for BB and stayed in the CAA for football. However, a move to the AAC would be the best situation possible, particularly for the BB. But that is not happening until (if ever) we fix that Depression-era stadium to make it up to league standards.

That's as honest as I can be. Best regards to Tribal's and S4F's families for a happy and prosperous 2018.

Looking at the tribe's history of conference mates I'm sure you are. Keep up the backsliding and you'll be sharing a league with Longwood and Radford before long.
