.@RiceUniversity president @davidleebron on signing AD @jkarlgaard, to a 3-year extension: "We’ve been really happy with Joe’s performance. He totally understands Rice’s values & he’s ambitious for the success of our athletics programs. He’s been an all-around success for us."

More like a renewal than an extension, if the numbers above are correct.
Three years is a reasonable number, I think.

Baseball coming off our worst year in 20+ years.
Basketball is 5-19.
Football went 1-11.
I guess "all-around success" means success in women's basketball? Must not include winning on the field in other major sports.
(Yes, yes, I know there are reasons for optimism going forward)

I think he has done a lot more good than bad. Probably cheaper to fire an AD than a football head coach if things go south.

Feel better about this extension after we got a little more clarity on the Bailiff situation

Buck stops somewhere. 1-11 in FB was on the cards in 2016... so failing to act ends up on Karlgaards shoulders, for better or for worse.
Regardless, no issue with this. I'm still scarred from the Greenspan debacle

He's done an outstanding job in my opinion. He has vision and a plan. I feel like the good times are right around the corner. I also haven't been this optimistic for quite awhile.

I’m afraid a lot of the recent fundraising, increased ticket revenue success and improved processes the insiders are excited about will slow down with the exodus in the marketing department, business office, and Josh Thiel headed back to California.
As these posters said earlier, the on field success across the board doesn’t stack up to where we were 5 or 10 years ago...but the word is all of Admin pieces are better than McKinsey could have ever hoped. We’ll have to see if that was Joe’s doing or all the people who just left.

This is my fear. JK is not willing to push for the institutional changes needed to cash his vision of conference championships in football and basketball, and being an attractive program for the AAC or MWC, let alone Big 12. From the football stands, and in the seats for a men's game at Tudor, it looks like we are watching the Titanic finally slip under the waterline.

There's only so fast you can push institutional changes, and I think Joe has pushed them about as fast as can be done. This thing didn't get sick in a day--it took 40 years of bad decisions. And it's not going to get fixed in a day either. I like the Stanford influence. They are the gold standard for running a top notch athletic program at an academically elite university. I don't think we can get to where they are, but the closer the better.

Well the admin pieces of the University have always been understaffed and underfunded. Being involved in some of the non-athletic alumni activities, I feel like they made a push a couple years ago when the new Alumni director came in, but since then there's been turnover and no backfilling of the positions, so they've become somewhat passive and inactive again. Rice has been bad at the ancillary functions for a very long time.
In the AD, if we lose Tanner I'd be worried, he is really dynamic and much more out there and visible amongst the alumni than Karlgaard.

Buffl - can you elaborate on the improvement in ticket sales and internal processes ? What have you heard ?
I wonder why the exodus of the marketing folks ? I understand that Joe surrounded himself with a large staff when he set up shop here. Perhaps too many folks.

I an confused by the Josh Thiel move. It seems lateral. Is deputy athletics director for athletics advancement better than senior associate athletics director and chief development officer?
Either that or the MWC - CUSA delta is so large that a bad MWC team still has significantly more $ than CUSA?

My impression was the move wasn’t necessarily solely made for career reasons.

I have no particular inside knowledge. I’m just repeating what numbers, Walt and the other insiders have been saying for 3 years. Per them, the senior execs the past couple years and every action they took were light years better than anyone ever before. Now they left. Except Tanner. So, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next as far as all this brilliance goes.

RE: Karlgaard - Contract extension
I'm glad JK is here. He is right guy for what needs to happen. Shout-out to Leebron for the extension.
However, AD at any D-1 program is going to be judged by W's and L's in FB and MBB as the standard. You don't get any credit for running a clean program but get punished/fired if there are blemishes of not doing things the right way. You don't get any credit for golf, track, tennis, WBB, Volleyball, etc. success although for the most part, all of the tier-2 sports have improved on his watch. JK has not yet shown consistent ability to win in either FB and MBB although there is optimism in both.
All the stuff around the staff changes, ticket sales, running a team, etc. matters in judging a D-1 AD but is irrelevant compared to W's in FB and MBB. JK, Leebron, BoT, etc. have all the necessary connections, politics, knowledge, process, etc. to get Rice out of C-USA to a better place but Rice is not getting out of C-USA until the FB and MBB product on the field shows ability to be relevant. JK is well connected and will land on his feet in the D-1 Athletic administration world but for him to be judged as a success at Rice, his eggs are in the Bloomgren and Pera baskets right now. He won't achieve his ultimate goals of getting Rice to a better athletic place until those two gentlemen can show ability to win and be relevant.

Josh's move was totally personal in nature. As most know, he took a 2 - 3 month leave of absence for personal reasons while he looked for an appropriate job on the West Coast. He and his wife are both from the Bay Area, and their parents still live out there. With the recent birth of their second child they wanted to move back home and give their parents an opportunity to live close to their grandchildren. I believe it's as simple as that. He left on very good terms with everyone in the department, and Josh personally called most of the major donors before his move became public.
