I wonder why the exodus of the marketing folks ? I understand that Joe surrounded himself with a large staff when he set up shop here. Perhaps too many folks.
I have no particular inside knowledge. I’m just repeating what numbers, Walt and the other insiders have been saying for 3 years. Per them, the senior execs the past couple years and every action they took were light years better than anyone ever before. Now they left. Except Tanner. So, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next as far as all this brilliance goes.
Tanner is by no means the only one left. And most of the two-down hires are still on board and doing the analytics, financial modeling, etc.

Good to know. Sounds like the trends will continue for years to come.

I’m afraid a lot of the recent fundraising, increased ticket revenue success and improved processes the insiders are excited about will slow down with the exodus in the marketing department, business office, and Josh Thiel headed back to California.
As these posters said earlier, the on field success across the board doesn’t stack up to where we were 5 or 10 years ago...but the word is all of Admin pieces are better than McKinsey could have ever hoped. We’ll have to see if that was Joe’s doing or all the people who just left.
Well the admin pieces of the University have always been understaffed and underfunded. Being involved in some of the non-athletic alumni activities, I feel like they made a push a couple years ago when the new Alumni director came in, but since then there's been turnover and no backfilling of the positions, so they've become somewhat passive and inactive again. Rice has been bad at the ancillary functions for a very long time.
In the AD, if we lose Tanner I'd be worried, he is really dynamic and much more out there and visible amongst the alumni than Karlgaard.
If the admin is understaffed, where is all the money being spent from 10x increases in tuition over the last 30 years?

+1. The admin is most definitely not understaffed at Rice. We should probably get rid of half of them minimum.

Also, Leebron and the Board of Trustees should have at least waited until JK figured out the Wayne Graham situation before granting this extension. In my opinion, anything he has done or will ever do positive at Rice will be clouded (if not completely disregarded) if this doesn't end well...for everyone. Luckily for him, my opinion doesn't matter much.

I was about to say as much. Good thought. I hope it works out for the baseball coach. I see no good reason to run him off at all, but that's not up to me.

If you guys say so..what I do know is that our alumni relations/ancillary services are crap and there are only 1 or 2 people visibly handling the responsibilities. I don't know where all these "extra" people are hiding.

Compared to most universities, Rice staffing is actually quite lean across the board.
A little too lean in a few areas in my opinion.

Agreed with regard to Athletics.
With regard to the entire university, absolutely not. What areas do you think need more staffing?

Leebron only has three assistants, so we could always add another dozen.

I mean, just because others are running operationally inefficient, doesn't mean we need to. Where do we need more staff?
One company I worked with had 2 gulfstreams vs another company that had 6 (some gulfstreamd and others). While 6 is more than 2, both were incredibly stupid at 26 dollar oil.
