RE: NCAA and FBI: P5 scandal
College athletics was fine for decades with the freshman team rule that limited athletes to three years of varsity ball...and it exists in some high school and prep school conferences today. It gave student-athletes
a year to adjust to college and the academic pressures, eliminated all freshman year athletic pressure,
and gave their bodies another year to mature.
And, of course, it eliminated one and dones and all the baggage it brings.
And it's a way the colleges can control things...and not the NBA.
What, I might ask, is bad about that.

Once again, it's no longer 1977. Kids play more basketball growing up and are better developed both physically and mentally. There's more of a support structure in place on colleges. It would also dramatically weaken the college and pro game if kids couldn't play at a high level for a year and stunted their development. So yes, it would be bad. The only group that can do anything about the one-and-done rule is the NBA and they're likely going to get rid of it soon.

I agree with Rocco. Take a look at the NBA and their G-League. Right now it is loaded with players who either will never get a real shot at the NBA or a place for "projects" to get developed. It is a low risk, low payroll outlay with minimum coming back in from ticket sales. If they had an 18-20 year old league or a minimum number of roster slots for that age group on each team, you would see kids play there instead of going to college at all. They would sell more tickets too. The NCAA P5 schools shouldn't be a minor league for the elite young hoops stars of tomorrow.

Wrong year or wrong sport ... I played varsity college ball as a freshman in 1977.

RE: NCAA and FBI: P5 scandal
In 1968, the NCAA allowed freshman eligibility in the University Division in all sports, except football and basketball, and extended the rule to those sports effective with the 1972–73 academic year.

The article quotes "nearly" $1.1B in revenue and $560M in outlays to NCAA member institutions. So where did the other nearly $540M go? Does it really cost that much in administration costs to run the NCAA? (Must be the cost of all those investigations of P5 schools).

RE: NCAA and FBI: P5 scandal
The NCAA is a corrupt organization that cannot be trusted to tackle any issues that would cost it revenue that can be funneled into the "other $540 million" mentioned earlier.
That being said, they are quite good at policing smaller issues such as college nicknames and logos for those schools with offensive names who don't generate much income for the organization...

NCAA and FBI: P5 scandal
University of No Classes is at it again. Loss of institutional control if I've ever seen it. After beating the no classes/cheating wrap, I suppose they feel invincible.

I applaud making administrators personally liable in theory, but will reserve judgement until some one at a P5 school is prosecuted and ends up with a huge fine, jail time or both. I'm not holding my breath.
The provisions about agents frost me. This is a pathetic response based upon the theory that the athletes receiving a free education through their work in playing sports are victims being exploited. If done correctly their endeavors will set them up for a lifetime.

Whether they're done correctly or not, there's an awful lot of administrators and executives that make a lot more than they're worth because the athletes are victims being exploited. I would have no problem with no money in college sports or everybody involved gets money from college sports. The NCAA being the only one getting money in college sports frosts me. They're definitely not earning it.
