AAC Hoops
Safe to say if Witchita State wasn't in the conference this year, we'd be looking at another TWO bid league, further cementing our mid-major status in the media. Ouch.
Glad the Shockers are here...REAL GLAD.
Injuries have killed UCF/SMU so that hurts. But even if they were good, they'd only contribute to beating up on each other and that's a problem right now because we get zero respect in the media.
When you are respected, beating up on each other actually reinforces the perception that you are a strong conference. When you aren't respected, it has the opposite effect.
The lack of respect is warranted for the most part: we have sent two and three teams to the NCAA the last few years and none making any real noise. This is killing us now (notice the bubble talk because Houston lost to Memphis. This is ridiculous). This conference tanked at the worst time in history with the G5/P5 spotlight and it's been cast on college basketball. As a conference, we have basically begged them to label us mid-major, which now some have. The Big East was spared because during the same time Nova won it all, XU has been great, and a cast of others (Butler, Creighton, Providence, SH, etc.) have been solid to good.
Bottom line, the AAC has dug itself into a nice hole in basketball and the only way out is for the teams that DO make the NCAA to do something and also for Temple, Memphis, and UCONN to get back to being ranked.
We need at least three this year and four (temple) would be great.
UC, WSU, and UH need to make some noise in March.
When the AAC formed most of us looked at basketball and thought, we are fine there...four to five bids a year with six in a good year. This is where we SHOULD be.

Yeah the AAC gets no respect. We need 2 of 3 out of WSU, UC, and UH to reach the 2nd weekend. And hopefully one to the elite 8 or final 4. That would really help garner some more respect. This year was kind of cursed for the AAC, because we easily could have gotten 4 to 5 teams in the field had SMU and UCF stayed healthy and Temple had won an extra game or two.
WSU really fell out of the spotlight with the losses to SMU and Temple and UC was in the spotlight then lost 2 in a row. We haven't done ourselves many favors, but we just need two second weekend teams and one to maybe go a bit farther. That would be a good start.

RE: AAC Hoops
This whole P5/G5 thing is out of hand. I saw they called the AAC a mid-major in baseball the other day. I mean, if there is one sport we aren't its baseball. This is a legit baseball conference. It shows you the power and traction behind this P5/G5 thing.
ESPN drives this and I think its part of a plan to eventually get a split. They have to create the perception now in all sports so when a split happens later, most won't bat an eye at it because in everyone's mind the G5 are G5 in all sports.
I guaranteed you ESPN want the G5 to have their own playoff in football, which would go a LONG way towards creating the split in the public minds eye. The AAC stands in the way of that playoff. The only question is, how long will Aresco hold out.

You either need lots of bids or one of your few bids to make a deep run.

yup....
ideally, you get four or five and some of them go at least S16 with one going E8 or F4. We need to start this and then repeat for a few years to change perception at this point.

Wichita State's been a National Power in baseball for nearly 30 years. Only in the last 7-8 years or so have we really started to slip. Butler has increased the rate of decline. Yet here we are with two first round draft picks on our team. Historically we've had home and homes with any power program we've wanted save for Texas, whose Soggy Burrito was in a head-to-head battle with Gene Stephenson for #1 winningest coach in baseball. Other than that, we've had home and homes with nearly all of the relevant B12 schools in the area (Nebraska, KSU, KU, OSU, OU (until Gene got cold feet on the day of the wedding - now they hate us).

Having both Memphis and UConn down at the same time definitely hurts.
I can't wait to see who ECU hires. Can we make a little noise in the basketball universe for the first time ever?

ESPN used the term mid major for baseball????? My goodness,....Sick. Didn’t realize Coastal Carolina was a “P5” baseball team.
I have nothing hatred towards ESPN. I want them to hurt. I’m actively rooting for them to be destroyed the way they’ve destroyed our schools.

That is the one thing we can NEVER let happen. Remember when the split to 1-A and 1-AA ? Those programs were intentionally screwed over.

I would consider the AAC adding BC as a travel partner for UCONN if BC is interested in ever coming back to playing college sports. I also see Wake Forest as another potential add as I don't think they're quite comfortable with the semi pro 5 status.

Everyone knows AAC brings solid competition in nearly every sport, sexy $$$ markets and eyeballs to the table... Labeling AAC mid-major is actually stupid hilarious now.
