There is a plethora of 6 win teams already and many more currently with 5 wins. So there will be a lot of 6-6 or 6-5 teams staying home this bowl season.

23 5-win teams. 8 play one another--so 4 of those are guaranteed to get to 6 wins (bringing us to a total of 74 bowl qualified teams). That means 15 more are playing for a slot. We could have as many as 89 teams vying for 78 bowl slots. As many as 11 6-win teams could find themselves sitting at home. Kinda of an odd turn of events after having to use 5-7 teams the last few years to fill empty bowl slots because there were not enough 6-win teams.

That said, in the last game of the season, 8 of the fifteen 5-win teams will play a team with a winning record. So I doubt we end up with anywhere close to 11 bowl qualified teams sitting at home.

Yep. Several P5's scheduled an extra 'rent a win' game this year to ensure they would get a bowl slot this season. G5's without 7 wins will have a tougher time finding a bowl game going forward.

I only see 6 teams with 5 wins each playing each other...Tennessee vs Vandy, Purdue vs Indiana along with Baylor vs Texas Tech. Who did I miss? Currently 71 teams with at least 6 wins so those 3 games put it at 74. And I agree there will probably at least 5 and maybe close to 10 teams with 6 wins staying home this Bowl season.

If VA Tech wins they have their 12 game. It will be Marshall. If not Marshall will not play a 12th game.

That makes absolutely zero sense with USM being a quick 1.5 hour drive to New Orleans and LA Tech being a 4.5 hour drive there. Meanwhile, Shreveport is a 1 hour drive for LA Tech and is Tech's largest alumni base.

– Walk-On’s Independence Bowl - west team. Conditional if ACC or SEC can’t fill a spot.

Lowest on the totem pole in the SEC is Mississippi State or Missouri. Vanderbilt would have to beat Tennessee next week, who also needs that 6th win, but has too many fans to fall to the Indy bowl. In the ACC, I don't think Wake, FSU, or Va Tech are going to make it, so with only 9 eligible schools, they won't be in play here. USM got mauled last year here by FSU. If Mississippi State lands here, we might be in the mix again, but I doubt it.

I hope it is not Troy, they could destroy Tech so could ULM. Who has Tech beat? 1 Good team UNT and that one yesterday was pitiful performance.

So, you think USM played great? We haven't played a complete game all year, and I doubt with one game left, we will! 04-cheers

Hey! At least La Tech had NO turnovers, while USM had to revert to practically rotating our 3rd and fourth string QB's ( 1 a soph, 1 a frosh) while attempting at the same time to season our 4th, 5th and 6th team freshman RB's.

We manged to eek it out while still experimenting with out OL, our QB's and our RB's....so I guess our pitiful performance (except for the last drive) just missed equalling your pitiful performance by 1 point.

Although I think both Southern Miss and FAU win their final games, I do not think either will receive bowl invitations. There are several P5 programs with 5 win and if they get to their 6th, they will land in those open spots ahead of our 6-6 teams. Sad, but seems to be the case.
