At first glance, I thought this was probably a weak attempt at humor or a National Enquirer type of headline.
However, I lost a close friend to kidney failure last year, and my ex- had a very dear friend in his 30's who died of kidney failure.
The problem is that there aren't nearly enough kidneys to go around, and so thousands and thousands of people die every year.
Many of those who live have an awful quality of life, because they have to spend a huge part of their life having kidney dialysis treatments.
So if it's possible to not only save tens or hundreds of thousands of lives, but to make it possible for people who have kidney failure to live normal lives without dialysis, it is absolutely wonderful.
This breakthrough by UAB physicians could save as many or more lives than are saved by heart transplants.
It's wonderful news! Kudos, UAB.
That’s what I’m saying. I get that people are finding humor in using pig organs in humans, but the feat that UAB accomplished by successfully performing this and creating the ground work for clinical studies to begin is massive. This could potentially save hundreds of thousands of lives and improve the quality of life for hundreds of thousands more.
Proud of my alma mater. Add this to being the development location of remdesevir, creating viagra, developing CI therapy for stroke victims, modifying herpes to attack tumors, developed the modern ICU, laid the groundwork for monoclonal antibody treatments, pioneered dental assistants, and contributed most of our early knowledge on HIV. Just a few highlights. Lots of people like to **** on the state of Alabama as ignorant, or downright stupid, but it really isn’t the case. I also believe UAB doesn’t get enough recognition for the quality of education and research. It plays second fiddle to the “flagship” and everyone assumes it’s providing a second rate education to said “flagship.”
UAB saved Birmingham, and it knows it too. They even made a commercial talking about Birmingham’s steel industry dying and how they were there to pick up the slack. Supports 63k jobs and a yearly economic impact of $7.5ish billion.

I totally disagree with you on this. UAB is recognized worldwide for the quality of education and research it provides. You can type in the Alabama and Auburn to see where they ranked. UAB only plays 2nd fiddle to the flagship in sports, education and research is a completely different story.

Among academics, yes. The general populous? No. I was asked about a year ago why I didn’t attend a “real” university and get a better education. The general Alabama population still sees UAB as a commuter school offering education to those not smart enough for Bama or who don’t want to move off. As a matter of fact, I had a Bama grad coworker act stunned that my diploma was UAB and not an Alabama diploma, because it was a “satellite campus.”

UAB is an average commuter school attached to the UA system medical school. Remove the med school data and get back to us. UAB is not even the best school in Bham, much less the state. Comparing UAB to AU or Bama is ridiculous, but whatever makes you feel good.

First off, how is it ridiculous to compare the two schools that are tied in US News rankings? UAB and Bama are both 148. Undergraduate programs in a dead heat, with UAB having a superior graduate school. UAB has a lower acceptance rate now as well.
Second, UAB is not really a commuter school. As a matter of fact, I think UAB has an almost identical percentage of undergraduate students living in dorms as Univ of Alabama now. The campus and student dynamic has changed DRASTICALLY over the past half decade. I believe the undergraduate campus alone has had nearly $700 million in new construction since 2010. If you count the rest of campus? Probably near $2 billion. Freshman are required to live on campus with housing rates now ranging between 80-90% on campus depending entirely on availability. They have even leased out a Hilton a couple blocks from campus this past year to house students because it has gotten so crowded, and some freshman living in Jefferson County are being told they’re unable to live on campus because of capacity issues. Still overall, UAB students live primarily off campus but within walking distance. There is a huge mass of rental units located close to campus. Apartments directly built, marketed, and operated for UAB undergraduate students (leased by the bed, not unit) within 3-5 blocks from Campus now are very prominent with some as tall as 17 stories exclusive to UAB students. Student housing actually has an office dedicated to helping place students in off campus housing. However, nearly everyone attending UAB past freshman year that I knew lived in any number of older buildings in 5 Points South/Glen Iris. It was rare to have students that couldn’t walk to class from their residence. It isn’t very “commuter” anymore.

He was brain dead before the surgery, and once the experiment was completed they removed him from life support. However, he accepted the organ and produced urine as normal. This is setting the stage for clinical trials.

This is how they keep "The Man" down. Memphis still gets the "Tiger High" moniker from UT, Ole Miss and Arkansas fans.
