RE: Men’s Basketball Recruiting Thread - 2024
There's a 6-10 UMass kid in the portal today, from Arlington, VA.
Also Max Shulga from VCU
Another kid, 6-9, from Manhattan

No idea their status, if any, with us, just throwing it out there.

Can we please just keep these guys around!? That will be the question we will be asking ourselves with all of this youth.

Im hoping this mystery commitment is a big that's better than Brown. Reading between the lines on here, it sounds like we backed off Brown because we had even better options. Id be pretty happy with a big of even higher talent than he brought.

In regards to IMO, if playing any 2G, we have Ceaser, Davis and Ware. If we add another PG,we would have three. As MG said, if you don’t get the job done, someone else will come in. Mg love’s competition.

Although coaches don't look at it as the traditional 1 through 5s anymore, I would says Davis is more of what you think a 3 is.

Gonna be loaded at the wing position, and very very young. It will be interesting to see the minutes disbursement. Looking more unlikely by the day that RJ will get time, and I think that is probably a good thing. I think you will probably see a lot of 6'5-6'7 guys at the 2-4 positions.

Thats my thoughts as well though I dont know the plan for Ceaser and Blakney.

I think we see:

PG- Imo, Ceaser?, Johnson
C- Transfer, Transfer?, Pounds

And in between you get Davis, Walker, Diggs, Blakney.........plus this new recruit, and Ware on their heels fighting for minutes.

Your follow posters tell me Ceaser, is not a PG.

Assuming that person commits, I would still like 2 bigs (5s). We are probably in good shape at the 4 with Walker, Pounds, Blakney and the ability to play small at the 4 with Davis.

If that person commits, I would eye 2 centers and a PG.

Can you tell us what position that unnamed player plays? It would make your remarks more meaningful when discussing additional players beyond the mystery player that you would bring in. If he is a center, then I would be more in agreement with your 2 centers and 1 point guard being added with the remaining 3 picks.

ODU currently has 2 Point Guards and 0 Centers lined up for this season. I would say that it is easier to move another guard over to fill in as the 3rd point guard (if needed) than it is to move a smaller player over to play Center. We've thoroughly tested out the 6'-7" and smaller players at the center position the last few seasons, and the general consensus is that it came up short - in more ways than one.

If we just ended up with 2 centers and one of them wasn't available to contribute (for any reason) then we have no legitimate backup. We are just filling the space with somebody that will be undersized in a lot of the games.

Bottom line I guess is that it doesn't really matter what we think. MJ is going to go after what he thinks he needs and go on with a plan for success after he has gotten whatever he was able to get. I'm willing to give him a chance to do things his way and see how it works out even if I - like everyone else - have my own thoughts on the matter.

With the weekend coming up, it feels like several recruits will be in for a visit. Maybe, next week we (recruiting nuts) will start to hear something.

Thats bc Ceaser is not a traditional PG and many want the 1980s pass first guy at PG.

Granted, he would not be my primary PG but I would use him as an scoring/energy boost off the bench and bc of his size, I would not want to pair him with another small PG very often.

True. We will have some $ though. At least that’s what I understand. This might be way too optimistic but I think we may able to to retain 70% of the roster. At least that’s what I’m hoping for.

Checked basketball signing dates for high school players. The dates run from 4/17 to 5/15, however they can sign after that. I bring this up because for MJ, it will effect Johnson and any other unsigned high school players that MJ is recruiting.

I don't see an issue with the PG being an offensive weapon as long as it's within the scheme of the offense. A lot of it will probably be dictated by who the primary scorers end up being. If the offense is balanced - including the PG - then that would be ideal.

The best PG to ever wear an ODU uniform IMO (Twardzik) - was a big scorer as well as a great passer that kept the rest of the offense involved and effective.

Since we don't have a MBB Portal thread, I'll put it here. Bryce Baker to Winthrop. Good luck, seemed like a good young man.

There is a MBB transfer portal thread. It’s not far under this one.

Yeah. I liked Baker and think he'll do well. Would have liked to see what he could have done with a different staff, but cant blame anyone for wanting to jump after last year. And would rather have HCMJ get his guys in here sooner anyway. Best of luck to him.

M13 with today being the 19th of April, I would think Johnson has signed or will be signing very soon. In regards, to the remaining four players on the team (from last year) it would a concern, as to what position MJ recruits with the remaining four scholarships. It’s the weekend, maybe we will hear something soon.

defensive liability, rarely rebounded his position, often seemed scared to shoot, ok from the corner but elsewhere awful. other than that. . . nice hair

He had a good shot and was fairly athletic. I agree with the defensive liability up to this point, and he was a streaky shooter. But anyone under the previous staff was a streaky shooter at best. And for that matter, nobody played good defense last year either. Im not crying about him leaving or anything. Just think he'll wind up a little better than he showed here. Id think HCMJ will make an upgrade at that position.
