Define working. We are landing some dang good recruiting classes in football and basketball.

They are highly unlikely to ever publish financials, or who is getting paid what, for competitive reasons. That will only change if NCAA or the law requires it for NIL.

I think the big test will be during the offseason. How many/few players do we lose to the transfer portal?
I may be wrong, but one of the reasons the collective was created was not just to give athletes an opportunity for NIL, but to also retain these players that may otherwise leave for P5 schools.
If we lose the fewest amount of players we've ever lost to the portal, then I think it's probably a good indication that the collective is working.
We will still lose players to the portal. It happens everywhere.

I don’t have a definition. I don’t know how many players they’ve signed up, what they’re doing, what they’re getting paid, etc.

As a 501©(3), their tax return will be public, but it’s not very informative usually.

Yes, it’s true that it happens to even the top “blue bloods” in power conferences. Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma…every team is subject to players transferring out…but then those same programs sign players from the portal. Talk about a nightmare for the coaches!

I’d like to think JMU will fare better than most programs (losing fewer to the portal while signing some excellent athletes), but JMU is not immune. I do think JMU’s historical culture of winning and positive environment situated within a beautiful campus will continue to be an advantage in holding onto players, as well as signing good players from the portal. So far Cig’s chops as a recruiter and developer of talent are paying real dividends.

Crazy for coaches for sure. Imagine trying to build (and maintain) quality depth these days in the era of NIL and the portal? Dang near impossible. Redshirt, schemdshirt... I'm good enough to start. To the portal!

The inevitable long term result is that injuries will have an even greater impact on the quality of football that we watch. The days of developing talent before seeing a game are almost long gone. Tis a sign of the times.

RE: Montpelier Collective
It's not like the NCAA didn't have decades to get a solid plan in place for letting this loose. I am actually glad these guys can make money off of their likeness, it was long overdue. However, why in the heck did the NCAA not start conceptualizing some guardrails while they pondered the move for 20 years is beyond comprehension. If a coaching staff is caught recruiting players from other teams, the penalties should be extremely stiff IMO. Hit them in the pocket book with 6 digit fines for tampering. It won't stop it, but it will slow it. The fact that P5 teams have scouts watching our games is pathetic and desperate IMO.

Sorry for the rant, the Montpelier Collective is great and is a model for what responsible NIL should look like, glad we have it.

I don't believe that's enough of a penalty. Due to the type of infraction, I believe schools should lose scholarships as a result. I think the penalty needs to be so severe that schools wouldn't even want it to appear like they might be speaking to players.

I get that, I just always hate when the NCAA hands down punishments that impact players on the roster that had nothing to do with it.

Also fine the coaches involved directly, don't do it at a program level. It would be impactful if the coach saw that 250K coming out of his/her bank account.

I wouldn't want them to take away from any players on the roster. I agree that they shouldn't have to suffer. However, I was thinking it would impact their cap for the next class. That way it wouldn't punish anyone on the roster.
My issue with it being financial is the school could find a lot of ways around it. Donors could pitch in to pay the fine so the school wouldn't have any consequences. It just feels like a slap on the wrist.

Yeah, I get that. They really need to work out a way that coaches are on the hook directly. Ban their a$$ for the season and make them rework their coaching staff. Fine the coach instead of the school. Coach decides to leave? Fine, they can't coach in the NCAA for X years as punishment. I'm tired of the players being the scapegoats for bad behavior by adults.

Keep NIL focused on rewarding players at your institution for excellent academic/athletic accomplishments, like the Montpelier Collective.

I agree. Some schools will laugh at fines, no matter how much they are. Restrict their schollies, make them suck at football, then see it that stops the corruption. Their ability to pay NIL will also have to be restricted. Otherwise, a kid not getting a scholly, but making mid- to high-six figures can afford to pay his own tuition, allowing the coach and school to sidestep the penalty.

I think you're right, but it's also worth looking at who we lose in addition to the overall number. Losing starters who want a shot on a "bigger stage" is way different than losing guys who aren't getting the playing time they want to get.

EDIT: Hopefully all these national TV games serve to help guys realize that they're on a pretty decent stage right now, and going to a mid to low tier ACC school (for example) might actually get fewer eyeballs on their games. It's pretty cool we're in that spot now.

It's crazy that some of these P5s can do this kind of thing with NIL.

This is absolutely insane. Someone needs to start a real, professional minor league for football and get this crap out of college athletics. Money ruins everything.

in the tweet thread, there were comments stating that it's a lease that continues as long as they are on scholarship and don't leave the school.
