RE: Caitlyn Clark becomes all-time NCAA leading scorer, men or women
She's a much better player relative to her sport (likely to be drafted first in her much exclusive pro league as opposed to Antoine Davis, who I don't remember being drafted at all) playing for a Top 5 team in arguably the most prominent conference and unlike Davis, she actually broke not only the D-I women's record but the overall men's D-I record as well. Again, she actually broke it while Davis didn't.

And it's a bit of a misnomer saying Davis wasn't taken seriously because he was, otherwise ESPN would have had no reason to show highlights of a mediocre, even at the mid-major level, Detroit team last year as he closed in on the record.

Everyone knows it's not an apples to apples comparison of what Pistol Pete did but it was still amazing in and of itself.

Yes, that was a key difference that helped get Clark the record and Davis did not.

Last year Clark got Iowa all the way to the NCAA championship game. Iowa played a total of 9 postseason games last year while Antoine Davis never made it past his conference tourney. Those extra postseason games can make a difference in career totals.

True. But even with that Davis will wind up having more games than Clark. Right now it's 143-130. 879 more minutes played.

And I thought she was going to get at least 2 million. Even I'm underestimating her star power.

Too bad she's not rubbing off on any other women's basketball (although I remember South Carolina-LSU got around 1.5 million on a Thursday night). My hope is women's basketball viewership and attendance continues next season after CC's gone.

And the other scary part is Caitlin's game peaked in viewership late in the 2nd half AFTER she broke Pistol Pete's record.

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2024/03...rship-fox/

"The Hawkeyes’ win, which peaked with 4.42 million from 3 PM ET through the conclusion,"

I thought people would tune in to see Clark break the record but well after she broke the record they stayed for the 2nd half!

Well she is playing a different sport.

Davis was at least considered the same NCAA sport, men's basketball.

I remember a game in 1976-1977, the New York Knicks at New Orleans Jazz. Maravich dropped 68 points on the Knicks in one game. The Knicks had a roster full of hall of famers: Earl the Pearl Monroe, Walt "Clyde" Frazier, Bob McAdoo, Spencer Haywood, and Bill Bradley. Phil Jackson was a reserve on that team. Maravich led the NBA in scoring that season at 31.1 points per game and was first team All-NBA.

Before he joined the NBA, Maravich was offered a million-dollar contract to join the Harlem Globetrotters. He was special. A freak. A once in a generation player. He might have lasted longer but his knees went on him. As a kid, I was able to watch him play on TV at LSU, and he was incredible. Win or lose, he put on a show and made the game entertaining.

The NBA was very good before Magic and Bird joined. The NBA of the mid-1960's consisted of nine teams and expanded to ten in 1966-1967 with the addition of the Chicago Bulls. You had to be really good to be in the NBA back then. By the time Maravich came around, there were 22 teams and the rosters had expanded to 12 players per team. But the game was different and big men dominated. There was no-zone defense in the NBA, no three-point shot, and hand checking was allowed. The game was more physical. The game has changed.

What Caitlan Clark has achieved is amazing. Her game will translate to the WNBA easily. I really don't like comparing scoring stats between men and women. Men play above the rim and women are a little more robotic. Being robotic is not a bad thing, they are more fundamentally sound. Clark is fun to watch, and she will be entertaining in the WNBA.

Caitlin Clark now has the record for 3 pointers in a season, men or women, in D1 college basketball. This breaks the old record set by....

Steph Curry!
