RE: Dissecting this season and what went wrong
He didn't; it did.
He's not a good coach.
He's not a terrible coach.
He and Pastner have produced alarmingly similar results.

He’s still learning. I’m not going to give up on him after one bad year. Let’s hope he’s not as stubborn as Josh was and learns something from all this. I still think he took off after the Virginia game and wasn’t as focused. Maybe his mom’s health played a part? Who knows. Lots of good coaches had bad years like Musselman, Cronin and Enfield. I think this season or last half of it was an anomaly. We shall see what happens going forward

We can hire a better coach… a more experienced coach… and oddly enough, a younger coach. Pretending this year is a one-off is silly. This year is just like the others. Winning the NIT with Moussa, Boogie, Baugh, DJ & DeAndre was a miss. Winning 1 NCAA tournament game with Duren, DeAndre, Lester, Nolley & ALo was a miss. Finishing 5th in the AAC & failing to win a game in the conference tournament was a miss.
Penny @ 52 is what he is and his remarks after the game only suggest he isn’t ready to accept any accountability & grow. He blames everyone but himself. Its time to move on or fall behind. 6 years is enough.

No, he is not learning. He will tell you over and over, he isnt re-inventing the wheel. He knows everything about basketball and there is nothing for him to learn....
I never expected that attitude from him, I really thought he was going to keep his ego in check and have a learning curb. There has been no learning curb. He does everything the same as he did in season 1.

RE: Dissecting this season and what went wrong
I like Penny & think had he not been injured, he would be considered in the same breath as MJ & Bird. Further he was & is a great representative of our university. But from a coaching prospective he is a proven recruiter of highly rated players but has coached 6 seasons with only 1 conference tourney championship, no conference championships, 2 NCAA invites & only 1 tourney win. That objectively puts him below JP in terms of wins, tourney appearance, tourney wins & way below JP in terms of conference titles. And we essentially fired JP. I would further argue - objectively that Penny is below Finch given Finch's tourney history.
And Penny is not showing progression considering the league now looks like CUSA under Cal & JP & we lost 7 conference games finishing tied for 5th or 6th. So what is an objective end this tenure?

A similar year next year would do it. You CAN chalk this year up to “just one of those years”, but he has seemingly underachieved every year. As long as he’s getting talent, he’s got a shot, but everyone is lising faith.

Same ole same ole
Looks like we will miss another opportunity.
We have now passed on Bruce Pearl, Scott Drew and Will Wade
I love Penny but he was not the best hire, he was the easy hire.
Wade would put us ahead of where we are now in 1 year.. He would kill it here and would probably take this Job if offered but he is going to get a dang good job soon and another we will miss out on..
not with the uncertainty of the future of the sport and the NCAA. He'd take any power school opportunity over us.
