RE: Alger Resigning
Isn't it really for the best that these searches are happening while JMU is (for now at least) at a historical peak in regards to national relevance and athletic success? Win/win for Alger/Bourne to leave on a high note, and I would imagine we're an incredibly attractive target at the moment for any potential candidates, resulting in a very strong candidate pool. Don't want to start a search during an off-year, so this seems like the best outcome.

Buried in the announcement, but it talks about a larger fundraising campaign being planned. Wonder if that is what will kick off BFS expansion?

And the Good News just keeps on coming.

What a GREAT DAY to be a DUKE!!!!

Jon Boy Alger will fit in prefect at American University, a small private university that has a very liberal stance with a very limited priority and interest in athletics.

Yeah I know he takes a lot of hate on this board. But enrollment increased like 14% under him and as someone who came out of state, JMU is definitely more known now than it was when he started. Not as good as Carrier (but to be real no one will be able to top him).

American is a large private university. People get skewed by the 40k plus enrollment schools, but over 10k is a large university.

AU was paying more than $1mil per year. Alger had a contract through 2027 at JMU at like 575k + housing and car. So math is 2x salary for next 5 yrs. Probably time for a mutual parting of the ways as we need someone with lots of energy to take JMU to the next level…not someone who is looking to retire in 5 or 6 yrs.

Alger is a competent administrator and successfully guided JMU through a lot of change. That said, excited for the next JMU president who has a great opportunity to solidify JMU on the national stage.

I don't read that to imply we are waiting until July to start a search.

I read it as after the executive Committee of the BoV makes their recommendation for acting president, the full BoV will do two things:

1. Approve an acting president to begin on July 1 (when Alger leaves).
2. Begin executing the search process for the next president.

In other words, the search begins when the acting president is named.

^ not according to the grammar / structure above ... :)

It could be way more clear - but I like your interpretation!

The university’s Board of Visitors will approve an acting president to start July 1. Also in the coming weeks, they will begin executing the search process for the next president of the university.

Will be interesting to find out the acting president. It seems like it would be someone already at JMU........

The last time I talked with Charlie I got the impression he was ready to go back to work. I think he misses his involvement with JMU.
I'd be all for him being the next President and then move Nick Langridge into the role. Continuity, Baby!

This feels like a pretty short-sighted comment.

Alger's accomplishments speak for themselves. The growth and change at JMU during his tenure can't be overstated. While some people might not have liked him personally, and perhaps his policies didn't line up perfectly with certain board members' politics, he was the leader during what has to be viewed as the (purple &) golden era of James Madison University. When we all eventually step back and view his tenure and what was accomplished he's going to be viewed very favorably.

I hate to say it, but there's no certainty that the next person in his seat will be as effective as Alger (or Carrier & Rose before him) has been. I personally think a handful more years from him would have been nice, ensuring that we keep the university on the same upward trajectory.

RE: Alger Resigning
As noted, American pays significantly more and has an endowment that will likely exceed $1 billion in the next 5 years. Clearly a move up and quite a snag by Alger, that would've been an incredibly competitive pool of applicants. Alger was at the helm during our transition to R2 status, most competitive decade in sports, enabled a move to the SB and FBS, and oversaw incredible growth in enrollment and campus modernization projects.

1. Fundraising
2. Fundraising
3. Fundraising
4. Raise academic profile - 124 on US news - need to get under 100
5. Continue to build National Brand
6. I am sure LH can weigh in with some inner workings / academia type objectives? More Research and Grant Funding? Move to R1

Can this year possibly get any better for JMU Sports fans?
It is almost unbelievable how many good things have happened to the athletic department in the last school year.

Yes, when it comes to athletics, this news is addition by subtraction.

Gotta move quick Board of Visitors.
Get the new Prez in role
Get a new AD in role

If it's not Nick in the interim I'll be surprised.

I'd bet my money the interim person comes from this list of names.
